Anyone who's seen Tunney and Liston knows it's Gene's fight. Quite comfortably, actually.
Liston plays right into Tunney's wheelhouse. Much lesser men than Tunney caused Liston problems with a half-assed approach to the style Tunney mastered. His footwork, footspeed, control of distance and feints are just too much for Liston.
Liston has the size advantage, obviously. And if you're looking for a textbook-perfect Boxer, you'll be hard pressed to find one better than Liston. He checks off all the boxes. And he does few things wrong from a technical perspective. He also is the more experienced fighter at THIS weight. Those "advantages" are all inconsequential for the purposes of this fight.
He also hits harder, but the disparity in power probably isn't that great. Liston's whole game, and thus his career, lived and died by his one-punch power. When it worked it was monstrous. When it didn't come though for him, he failed miserably. Gene, conversely, started out as a puncher, but developed layers to his game. Dempsey said Gene hit harder than anyone he'd faced. Tunney's sparring partners said his power was improving just as he called it a wrap on his career. He's probably the closest analog we have to a prime Benny Leonard on film.
Gene is far tougher, far smarter, far quicker, far better conditioned and far craftier. He had the heart of a warrior, while Liston was a punk.
So yeah, maybe Gene flies too close to the sun and is caught with a punch which he never recovers from. But the best Tunney is matador to Liston's bull.
If Liston can't swim in the kiddy pool, why after you gonna throw him into deep waters with a great like Fury?

The jab, the movement, and Fury ability to slip and keep out of range will keep Liston frustrated and swinging at thin air.
Liston was "older", but he certainly didn't have a lot of mileage on his odometer. He simply didn't have the footwork becoming of a champion.
Fyry has remarkable footwork for a man his size.

Shows you how ******ed Rusty is.
