After he was ASSURED he could fight Adonis after his fight against Pascal, WBC changed their mind and ask Alvarez to face Gvozdyk to be the mandatory... which he already was since 2 full years.
He didn't ducked him ; He was ALREADY the mandatory and wanted to have a shot with a champion. He said F*** Off and Yvon Michel called Kovalev (Who was at that moment a lot more feared than the unknown Gvozdyk) for a title fight. We all know how it ended.

Never mind Kovalev, it's looking increasingly certain that his days at the top are done. What about Bivol and Beterbiev? Marcus Brown looks ranked highly across the boards, Badou Jack similarly so. There's plenty of other decent established and up-and-coming names in the division as well; Murat, Boesel, Valera, Koeling, Smith, Barrera, Lee, Yarde, even Buatsi is looking like he could jump the queue within a few fights.

He gassed the round before, Kovalev still thinks he can fight like a 25-30 year old. If he accepts his age and tailors his style slightly to fit, he may get another year or so at the top. But I think he's either too stubborn, or is simply unable to change. The re-match should answer all questions, if the same thing happens Kovalev may as well hang up his gloves. If he wins, expect a big money unification at the Russian Luzhniki stadium against Bivol or Beterbiev before he retires.
