Comments Thread For: Usyk vs. Gassiev - CompuBox By The Numbers

Masterful performance by Oleksandr Usyk, who got stronger and more dominant as the fight progressed. He averaged 21 of 78 punches per round over 12 rounds, while Gassiev was reduced to 8 of 26 per frame.

What Usyk did to Gassive is what Canelo must do if he (Canelo) is to defeat GGG in their rematch. IMHO Canelo cannot do it; however, it is the blueprint he must follow.

Usyk had 10 Kos his first 10 fights, but once he stepped ups his level of competition, he has still been hurting guys but not stopping them as much. With that said, he had Breidis hurt a bit in their fight. Gassiev, not visibly hurt very much, but Gassiev is built like a tank, not to mention Usyk didn't go to his body at all. If Usyk had gone to his body the same way Lomachenko goes to the body, I think we would have seen Usyk as having a similar amount of power for his division, but because he didn't, we didn't.

So yeah, is Usyk the cruiserweight GGG? No, he's the cruiserweight Loma. But is he the cruiserweight Paulie Malignaggi? Hell no.

GGG has jab and an average reach same as Canelo's. Gassiev doesn't have GGG's jab, and Gassiev has T-Rex arms for his division compared to GGG, Canelo, and particulary Usyk. Canelo also hasn't shown the gas tank that Usyk has. Usyk is 40 pounds bigger than Canelo yet just threw twice as many punches as Canelo does. Crazy. Yes not all were hard shots but it still says a lot.

Usyk has punching power, not as strong as other CW but look at Gassievs neck (its just a tree trunk!) and still, his head was snapping back several times after good shots. Usyks jab is not a weapon of mass destruction but setting attack and fencing tool

6 body shots thrown in 12 rounds and 5 of them landed, no liver shots though(which is kind of surprising for Usyk being a southpaw)

Yeh you are forgetting something MAJOR, and that is that Canelo is not as good a boxer as Usyk and lacks the movement, and GGG is a better boxer than Gassiev.

Say what you will about GGG, at least he has a fuccing jab unlike Gassiev. The GGG / Gassiev comparison is hilarious to me because I view Gassiev as being closer to a David Lemieux than a GGG.

There are only a handful of professional boxers without a solid amateur career who can be compared to those who have it in terms of technique (punches, footwork, body moves).
I firm believer that you can't replace lack of classic amateur school with 20-30 professional fights.
Gassiev lacks classic basics, though has a lot of talent and discipline and achieved a lot. against Olympic champion he couldn't show (was not allowed) his skills.
Canelo pretty much the same and we saw it against Floyd.
Both of them are getting better through fights, but still, an aging well-schooled classic boxer gives them a lot of problems up to defeat (or "draw")

... Canelo isn't a "Ukrainian school" product, and Loma's papa isn't his coach...

... Gassiev is a deadly mid range hooker, but not against a slick southpaw like Usyk!... and GGG holds the stiffest jab in the sport to date...

Gassiev has a good chin but usyk definitely isnt a power puncher by any means, hes a volume puncher with just enough pop on his shots to make you think twice
