Comments Thread For: Deontay Wilder vs. Luis Ortiz: Afterthoughts

by Cliff Rold - Some longtime boxing fans and followers are good at lying to themselves. They'll discuss the finer points of the game and grow to admire the most sophisticated of slick boxers. It might even come to a point where they say they prefer to see a fine technical match over a brawl...

All it takes for Ortiz to come back is to cut good 20-50 pounds out of him and he is all good for 12+ rounds.
Provided we talk about the following year or 1.5 max.

You're right that losing weight would help, but in general I disagree. I think his ship has sailed in terms of being in his physical peak. He's only going to get older now and training camps will take their toll. I would like to see him fight the loser of Parker/Joshua. Think that would be great to re-kickstart the career of one of the losers after the loss.

If he was a few years younger he definitely would have pressed the action more in the 8th round which would have been great to see.

He did himself proud with his performance though

Nice article, Cliff. Always enjoy your work.

Sadly, I think Ortiz will never get a shot at another title. Not while he’s still a threat anyway. Athletes don’t get better at his age, they only decline. And after the Wilder fight, his perception as a threat has been solidified. If Luis gets another shot at a title, it’ll be in a couple of years. That’s not a terribly long time. But for Ortiz, it may as well be an eternity.

My thoughts on the fight ... Wilder won because he's younger than Ortiz and has a young man's recuperative powers and reckless willingness to put himself through anything to achieve his goal.

Ortiz doesn't have those qualities. He gassed in the 7th round, didn't have a second wind to fall back on because of his age, and, imo, he accepted defeat at that point and it was only a matter of time before Wilder finished him.

Edit: It was a great fight, so credit to both men for keeping me wide awake and on the edge of my seat at 5AM UK time after a 12 hour shift at work and 6+ hours watching boxing from both the UK and the US!

Ortiz was too old. Sorry if that makes me sound like a hater but it's the truth. He didn't have the engine of a younger fighter and got found out late on. The only reason wilder got him out of there was because Ortiz gas tank emptied. And it wasn't like a brook.spence scenario where it was due to intelligent pressure, it was due to him being exactly what it shows on the exterior, an old man.

Only problem with your theory that debunks it is. AJ after he dropped Wlad gassed himself trying to finish Wlad, and needed a round or two to recuperate! So if it was Ortiz’s age, why did AJ need to recuperate? The truth is the size of most HW is why they require more time. Ortiz would have recuperated eventually, Wilder just recuperated faster do to a few reasons age though somewhat of a factor is the least of those factors!

You don’t like Wilder...it’s ok to admit you don’t like the guy! What’s not ok is to discredit someone because you don’t like them. That’s says you can’t rise above your emotions and be honest! That being means no one should take you seriously, and your comment doesn’t hold water! Here’s the prof that your comment is BS! Wilder dropped Ortiz early fourth round I believe, and we all who can be honest no Ortiz made it out the round because the round ended after the ref checking on Ortiz! Wilder is a finisher, and if he had more time in that round the honest man has to favor the notion that Wilder would have been all over Ortiz! Your comment didn’t take this into consideration at all. Admit it you just don’t like the BOMB SQUAD!
