    Pontypridd's Darren Wilson has established himself as a mainstay of Welsh boxing, not only guiding Nathan Cleverly to a second world title but also working with a budding stable of fighters in the Cardiff region. Cleverly made the decision to retire after losing to the excellent Las Vegas based Swede Badou Jack in August. Wilson, who worked with Cleverly in different capacities for the majority of the two time world champions career, gave his thoughts on Cleverly's career and decision to retire.

    Rarely I have seen a fighter more undeserving to be called a "world champion" than Cleverly. The last "title" was "won" by being beaten up by Jurgen Braehmer, who had to stop because of an injury. Cleverly was even bragging about the "victory" afterwards. That says a lot about the actual worth of today's titles.

      Simply DISGRACEFUL comment on a forum like this. He was a proud owner of the WBO title for years and went down bravely to the best. His title win over Braehmer was one of will and determination. His only losses were to the likes of Jack, Kovalev, Bellew and Fonfara in an entertaining war. Thanks Clev enjoy your well deserved retirement!

        Full disclosure... he beat Belew once and lost to him once. But yeah, 5 defenses of his belt the first time, fought some solid names. Not THE best but certainly was very solid in his prime.

            "Like this" meaning that one is not allowed to express an opinion freely?

            He was a "proud owner of the WBO title for years" only because he won and defended it against third-rate contenders.

            His title win over Braehmer was one of will and determination? Please. He was getting hammered, won only because Braehmer got injured.

            His only losses were to the likes of Jack, Kovalev, Bellew and Fonfara. Namely, the only decent names he fought. Jack and Kovalev did not just beat him; they wiped the floor with him.

            Looks like we have different opinions in regard to an opponent to be classified as valuable. Cleverly may have been a "solid" fighter at a certain level; most definitely he was not a champion.
