I think we can all agree that Weeks is a shiet ref! We saw this clearly during the Floyd-Maidana fight (although I bet most of yawl complaining about him now were praising him then, in fact I don't bet, I know).
There were no low blows, those punches were on the belt line. The tem low blow is interpreted in boxing as 'below the beltline' , anthing on or above is legal.
Kovalev knew he was gassing so he tried to catch a couple of breaks by claiming low blows, but Weeks saw through it and didn't allow it.
The stoppage was crap though. Tony should have given Kovalev a countdown. He most likely would have been stopped anyway but that's no excuse to just end such a major fight like that.
I see people saying that there aint no standing eight count in pro fights, but then there is a loophole when the guy is leaning against the ropes. The ref can call it a KD because the guy was using the ropes to keep himself up, but perhaps Kovalev should have taken a knee rather instead of trying to con the ref.
Anyway the saga continues. Maybe we'll get a third fight down the line, provided Ward can get past Stevenson (if he even fights him).
I'll be eating my crow till I'm full tonight and in the coming weeks or even months!
Major props to Ward for switching things up immediately!
If you can't outbox a guy who can box and hit then target his gas tank and take it to him inside!
He proved me wrong twice lol, in the first fight which I said he would outclass Kov and then the 2nd fight which I had Kov would win!
Weeks did stop the fight too early but Kov def was looking for a way to get Ward deducted a point(****** tactics)!
That right hand that rocked him is a bad look on Kov from here on out, never would've expected that!
He def doesn't listen to JDJ, he told him to let Ward come to him and throw more jabs and use the left hook instead he followed Ward around and wrestled with him again!
Ward is #1 in my book and he does whatever it takes to win, I'm eating my crow...excuse me I was horribly wrong!
Sorry, you don't get off that easy. You said Ward couldn't hurt a marshmallow. You said Kov had nothing to do with Russia forever, when his previous fight to Ward 1 was in Russia. You said Ward refused ped testing- he did when Rodriguez tried to demand it after contracts were signed and halfway through training camp. KOV IS THE ONE WHO REFUSED PED TESTING WHEN PASCAL OFFERED TO PAY FOR IT FOR THEIR FIRST FIGHT.
You said, someone needs to hand me a book on boxing because Ward is clearly not p4p king.
Kov's record with ped testing: 0-2.
Ward's record with ped testing: 3-0
You lied about known facts, insisted Ward couldn't hurt a marshmallow and claimed TRBR, the Ring, me, and every other reputable boxing organization needed to a book on boxing for believing Ward is #1.
You lied to try and make belief what you wished was really true.
Sir, you are obviously a newbie to boxing, so here's some advice: keep your mouth shut about stuff you have no clue about.
Your location has a name: the home for adults with mental deficiencies. Now go to bed, you ******ed asswad.
What is it with African American referees and judges always helping African American boxers defeat non-African American boxers?
This was just ridiculous.
First, a clear low blow that sold-out Weeks let go, a couple of rounds before the final round. It was a clear low blow. It took the oxygen and strength out of Kovalev. He could never recover from that. So Weeks, instead of stopping the action and letting Kovalev recover, and maybe discounting a point from Ward, let the fight continue. THIS STARTED THE END.
Fast forward a couple of rounds. Ward catches Kovalev with a great right to the face, with all his body behind it. A legit shot. He stuns Kovalev but does not knock him down. Then, Ward goes after Kovalev, and throws IDK three, four or five straight blatant low blows, while Weeks deliberately covers the cameras and pretends not to see. After Kovalev gets evidently weakened by a flurry of low blows, Weeks suddenly stops the fight for no justifiable reason, instead of penalizing Ward or even disqualifying him for throwing a barrage of low blows . Weeks is a sold-out embarrassment.
This was totally ridiculous. And then, either naive or sold-out Kellerman says in public that he considers Ward the #1 P4P boxer today, after such blatant robbery, during his interview with Ward, where he pretended not to notice about all the low blows.
I have the highest respect for REAL African American boxing champions, like Ali, Foreman, Hagler, Leonard, Tyson (before the bitings), and many, many more real fighters, but this has gone beyond blatantly disgusting. The way referees helped Mayweather Jr. in the past and the way Weeks just ruined Kovalev's career today, is a total shame. Even with the very bad camera angles, it was pretty obvious that Ward "won" the fight, by deliberately connecting low blows, knowing that his accomplice Weeks would turn a blind eye on his cheating. Ward is a pathetic cheater, and he evidently is the one who chooses who will help him "win" his fights.
Sad day for boxing!
Was Tony Weeks helping the African American fighter when he allowed Maidana to get away with three INTENTIONAL low blows, too many to count rabbit punches and karate chops, a muo thai knee, and an american football tackle in the Floyd-Maidana fight?
Should the referree have let it go on a little longer or scored it a knockdown because Kovalev was being held up by the ropes?
Yeah.
Nevertheless, Kovalev was probably gonna get KOed at the end of the eighth or sometime in the ninth; the body shots took their toll.
All in all, still really good performance by Kovalev in an excellent fight with two top notch fighters. Kovalev made some nice adjustments from the first fight and it was entertaining.
Roy Jones Jr. saw it. Kov was gassed.Ward made adjustments with timing and body attack.Kov. complained about LBs, but Ward was getting hit behind the head, just like last fight.Ward is the type of fighter that's not gonna wait on refs. You foul me, I'll foul you back. One of the last punches looked borderline, but Kov was feeling it to the BODY,and was looking for a way out. I don't think there were any intentional LBs in this fight. I did think Weeks should've backed off and let Ward finish him, beat him into total submission,so this conversation abt LBs would've been moot. But I'm not the ref, Weeks might have saw Kov being defenseless and called the fight. I don't think a rematch is necessary. I do think Kov is making excuses to stay relevant as a Marquee fighter, and doesn't want his stock to drop in the game. But He showed really bad sportsmanship in this one. I wouldn't give him a redux just on principal.
I completely agree that Roy called this fight perfectly. There's been a lot of crying on here about the commentary being pro-Ward. I didn't see that. They gave Kovalev his due. He was keeping the fight relatively even with his hard jab. But I mentioned to my homeboy watching the fight with me around the 3rd round that I didn't like Kovalev's body language.
I pesonally felt that had the first fight been 15rds, Kovalev would have been stopped. And this was basically rounds 13-20. Kovalev didn't run outta gas in the first fight. He had the gas beaten outta him. The only difference tonight was that Ward came in with no respect for Kovalev's power and took it to Sergey from the opening bell. Kovalev was bent over by several good body shots, and was allowed to recover because he was able to sell tt as getting hit low.
People keep saying it was an early stoppage. I just don't understand what the ref is supposed to do when a guy is bent over and not trying to defend himself from an oncoming assault.
