I think he figured he was up on the cards and gassing so he would quit if given the opportunity. He thought it would go to the judges and being up he'd win. But the plan back fired on him. Kovalev is a quitter put this in the books next to No Mas

So claiming he's P4P number one is not deluded.
I was laughing at that status yesterday because I thought and still thought he lost to Kova the first fight.
Not that he stopped Kova, he proved us he's.
But I'm not surprised, like I said before and after the first fight, Ward had some ring rust and prepared with average fighters this big fight.
He was on point tonight.

Ward landed a low blow early in the round that hurt Kovalev. Kovalev motioned he was hurt, but Weekes refused to give him a rest. Ward saw Kovalev was hurt to the "body" (****), and as he said in the post fight interview, he knew Kovalev's hands were down to protect his body, which is the only reason he was able to throw that right to Kovalev's head that hurt Kovalev, and then he threw three low blows to Kovalev's **** again on the ropes, hurting Kovalev to the **** even more. Kovalev sagged into the rope thinking the ref would warn Ward, or at least give a count for the ropes holding him up so he could recover, but instead Weekes stopped it at the earliest opportunity. Why? He never even got knocked down. He wasn't eating clean shots to the head except for that one early in the round.
The commentary team was also fluffing Ward up the entire night. It felt like the only one not on the take this time was Lederman. We know where Max and Roy stand, and it felt like Lampley got reprimanded after the last fight after Ward and Virgil complained about him and said he should retire.
Was Kovalev gassing? Yes, low blows and hip shots all night will do that to you. But he was still winning rounds. The entire thing was a joke. I know Ward fans will celebrate like crazy because they never cared how Ward won, just that he "won," as we saw after the first fight. But come on man. Come on.

even if ref gave kovalev 8 counts, ward would still win the fight
all kovalev did are straight punch and jab

Weeks stopped it way too soon, and way too much grabbing from Ward (as usual), but still, a salute to Ward for the W. Doubtful a Ward/Stevenson fight will ever be made though, but I guess stranger things have happened. And the only reason I say that is, it seems that THE fights to be made are the ones most often avoided for whatever series of reasons.
Kovalev can bounce back, he'll just have to apply himself and stay busy. He has a killer stiff jab and some other solid boxing skills, so it isn't as if he's only a puncher. I doubt seriously we've seen the end of him.
Now we also have to look at the other notables in the division. Besides Stevenson, there's Beiterbiev, Eleider Alvarez, Joe Smith Jr., Sullivan Barrera and some others... so in no way can it be said the LHW division is weak. If Ward and/or Stevenson plan on sticking around... they'll definitely have their hands full.

And stop insulting people on the internet.
You're basically looking like a ****** bully like Kovalev instead of a smart classy guy like Ward.
