The first fight between Andre Ward and Sergey Kovalev was extremely competitive and had its fair share of dramatic moments. The second round was the most memorable of the 12 because Kovalev dropped Ward with 42 seconds left in it and Ward showed tremendous resolve as he fended off the Russian knockout artist to get back in the fight. Ward doesn't get it. My only problem with his style is that he's a cheater. Point blank period. If he can avoid Kovalev all night without holding, without dipping below the waist, without coming up with his head, and without hitting and holding, but he "does what he has to do" within the rules and wins, then I'm a fan! The reason Ward does not get respect is that it's clear in all his fights that he's not actually that good. He can't win without breaking the rules. His defense is not good enough to avoid his opponent without cheating. His entire claim to fame is inside fighting, but he does not know how to fight inside! Instead of he grabs to get inside and alternates hitting and holding with each arm. Cheating! Not real inside fighting!

James Toney was a real inside fighter, and he got respect. Ward is an overrated cheater with a great snapping jab and decent left hook only because he fights with his power hand as his lead, a terrible slapping right for the same reason, and a bunch of holding and hitting and cheating on the inside. How is that a great fighter? If he wasn't an American gold medalist fighting in Vegas or Cali, he would be disqualified every fight, so of course people hold that against him as a boxer. Why wouldn't they?

Ward will do what he always does, try to take the fight out of the fight. He'll stop the flow of the fight by clinching. Eventually he'll hope to tire the other guy out. He'll use his jab and hook but you won't see many clean punches or crisp combinations. The fight will go to the judges and he'll hope he's done enough to convince them that he's won.
