Comments Thread For: Canelo: No Respect for Chavez Jr.; He Has Shamed His Country

Among Canelo Alvarez's criticisms of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is that Chavez tends to say more negative things about Alvarez when they're far apart. When they're face to face, the Mexican superstar claims Chavez is much more respectful and avoids trashing Alvarez's legacy. Alvarez made sure he wasn't hypocritical when they sat down with HBO Sports for a "Faceoff With Max Kellerman" segment that debuted recently.

Strange to me how Mexican boxers are always talking about how they represent their country and how one is more Mexican/less Mexican, etc. Not that I think there's anything wrong with it. It's a foreign concept to me. I can't imagine two Americans arguing over who is more American (unless it's the GOP primaries).

Some people in Mexico feel Canelo did the same when giving the belt away. But that's none of my business..

I recall how much Mexican fans resented De La Hoya when he fought and beat Chavez. Apparently, Chavez is a "real" Mexican, DLH is Mexican-American, and while he was huge with Mexican fans, he was pigeon-holed into a different category once he took on Chavez. Suddenly he wasn't Mexican enough. I agree, it's an odd dynamic.
