Count Bob Arum among those that think Gennady Golovkin began showing his age against Daniel Jacobs. The 85-year-old Arum was in full promotional mode Friday, when during a conference call Arum claimed that Gilberto Ramirez would "destroy" Golovkin if they fought. Arum's company, Top Rank Inc., promotes Ramirez and has been trying since last year to generate interest in a Golovkin-Ramirez super middleweight match as a Plan B for Golovkin if Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez won't fight him.

Maybe but it's crazy how everyone appears to almost be writing off GGG based on the Jacobs performance. Even if you scored the fight for Jacobs, which is reasonable, it's not like GGG got completely outclassed and taken to school. It was close and competitive. It seems like every ones confidence has skyrocketed regarding facing him when not too long ago he was having trouble securing an opponent.

Ramirez is too unproven for me to take him over Golovkin, not to mention too inactive in the past year. If he had another fight or two before then, maybe.

Great fight. Would like to see Gilberto unify first. This is a superfight but it seems most fans still look at it on the same level as Billy Joe Saunder vs GGG. Let Gilberto prove to the fans how great he is first. Let him take out Degale, or at least win a second belt from someone. Then fans will know him vs GGG really is elite vs elite, and that will spark a ton of interest. Right now people overlook Gilberto because all the other top (but inferior) 168s are with Haymon, and because he was injured. Let Gilberto prove that he's a step above the PBC 168s, then let GGG fight him, and the fight will mean a lot more.

BUT, it won't mean **** if this process takes into mid next year and GGG slows down even more. We need to see this by April next year at the latest, so it's really on Arum and Gilberto to speed things up and get Gilberto a top opponent to prove himself quickly so that the GGG fight will be ready. Because talent wise it's ready right now. And GGG is viewed as elite already. It's only Top Rank that hasn't done its job yet on its side of the street to prove to fans that Gilberto is elite too. They should have done that already. Now we're in a rock and a hard place situation where time is running out on the fight and yet Top Rank hasn't done its part yet. So they need to get on it. Have Gilberto fight a top champ on GGG-Canelo undercard, then winners can fight at 168 in December or January. That's the best plan.

You're right he wasn't outclassed but the thing is Jacobs had success, but he didn't do anything special. He used movement and was able to generate his own offense. Almost the same thing Brook did for a few rounds. We saw the kind of success light punching Monroe had when he was able to generate his own offense. The knock on Golovkin is not that he's not a good fighter. It's his ability to deal with an opponent with size, has boxing ability, and won't wither the first time they feel his power.
