Barrientos was three years and a month shy of winning the vacant WBC SuperFeatherweight title by besting Ruben Navarro (UD 15), and had lost to Flash Elorde in an OPBF Lightweight bid (PNTs 12).

The three-fight series was comprised of Barrientos' 16th, 17th and 18th pro outings. Barrientos won all three, UD.
