Crawford vs. Molina Photos of Weigh-In - John Molina Jr. came in four pounds overweight Friday afternoon for his 140-pound title fight against Terence Crawford. Molina will have two hours to lose the weight and come back to the scales at CenturyLink Center in Omaha, Nebraska. If Molina (29-6, 23 KOs) cannot lose the weight, their HBO "World Championship Boxing" main event still is expected to take place Saturday night, though Crawford's WBC and WBO super lightweight titles wouldn't be at stake.

Molina if I recall had to come back against Hank Lundy, who Crawford beat easily. So Molina is probably going to have to stalk Crawford even more and hope to land the home run punch. The problem is Crawford can punch unlike many of the American boxers who just run and score points, so he's not as vulnerable to being stalked the way others are.

For Molina to win, he will have to land a homerun or three, since he hasn't shown much one-punch KO power anyway, or his boxing skills will have to be much improved. Yes he beat Provo but Provo seemed on the downside at least in that fight.

So we'll see. As far as tuneups go, at least Molina can punch. Promoters like Haymon have gotten so protective of their fighters, they won't even put them in with tuneups who can punch anymore, even if they're terrible boxers. After what happened to J'Leon Love and a few other prospects, Amir Imam etc, now Haymon takes ALL the risk out of the tuneups. Not just the "all you have to do is not get caught clean, and you will win because your opponent can't score points or box" risk, but ALL the risk. Make the fights literally IMPOSSIBLE to lose. Like Jacobs-Mora. You can get overaggressive, forget defense, WALK RIGHT IN to a perfect shot you don't expect, and STILL not be in any danger of losing because his punches have little power at the elite level.

So at least this tune-up harkens back to the heyday of slightly ****tier tuneups, like when Breidis Prescott was used as an opponent, and there was at least a CHANCE of something crazy happening, so you could at least have SOME tiny, tiny, tiny reason to watch. But mostly I don't expect this to be a good fight, and I may not watch.

I'm thinking of boycotting HBO Boxing until the Kovalev-Ward rematch happens with neutral refs/judges from different countries. Showtime's card this weekend is pretty good though. I'm worried Cuellar-Mares might be an overrated fight - haven't watched Cueller much recently but what I saw did not impress me in terms of the world level. But, Mares does get hit...

And same with Zlaticinin. Never really seen him as an A-side on Showtime or PBC. He's fighting a bigger guy with more power and a longer reach, probably better speed too. How is Zlaticinin's chin? I've never heard anyone say if it's good or not. I think that could be a one-sided fight too. I think Zlaticinin's best shot is kind of like what they say about Thurman, how he's talented but doesn't really like being in fights, and maybe Mikey is the same way, since he "quit" against Salido. But then again if you had a huge cut, and you knew you were going to win, and you had a hometown ref who would let you stop getting punched in your cut and still win, wouldn't most people take that option and save themselves the damage, especially since the cut was not caused by a legitimate punch, but by a headbutt?

So it may be nothing, but then again, Mikey did sit out as well, and dodge Gamboa. So there have been multiple signs in Mikey's career that maybe he's got elite talent, but doesn't really like the sport, or like getting hit. Most boxers don't ENJOY getting hit, but with Mikey it feels like it might go beyond that. So IF Zlaticinin can take Mikey's shots, and work the body early, and make it a rough fit at least, maybe Mikey could fade or go into a defensive shell later on. That is probably Zlaticinin's best chance. I do think he's more of a grinder, more happy to be in tough fights. But in the end, talent usually wins out, even over mental deficits, in boxing. I mean people said Ward was a smarter fighter than Kovalev but look what happened. Kovalev's greater talent is what won out and he lapped Ward on almost every objective scorecard.

So I mean I hope Crawford-Molina, Zlaticinin-Garcia, and Cueller-Mares are all good fights, but I'm worried we could end up a little disappointed with three one-sided fights, and Charlo-Williams the only good one. But let's hope it's a great day for boxing regardless.
