Comments Thread For: Saunders: Need Another Fight Before Golovkin, Other Top Foe

Billy Joe Saunders isn't quite as eager as he once was to fight Gennady Golovkin after struggling against Artur Akavov. Saunders' first fight in nearly a year resulted in an unimpressive unanimous-decision defeat of the Russian southpaw Saturday in Paisley, Scotland. England's Saunders said he "stunk the place out" out after making the first defense of the WBO middleweight championship he won from Andy Lee (34-3-1, 24 KOs), the Irishman Saunders defeated by majority decision in a 12-rounder last December 19 in Manchester, England.

Wake up call to BJS! You were just gifted a win over a nobody. Take those 1.5/2 Million GGG can give you and sell that belt before you get smashed by an Uber driver and loose the oportunity to get that cash.

Saunders can go fight Canelo and make more than what team g-string is offering

I'm sure Avtandil Khurtsidze is ready, willing, and able to fight Saunders whenever he's ready! He's also the WBO #1 ranked contender at MW! Make it happen! WAR WHITE TYSON!

Khurtsidze should have to be next unless Canelo demands his mando shot.

Don't forget how the mandatory system works:

The number 1 is the automatic choice, which in this case is Khurtsidze.

But then a couple of things can happen

                  1) The promoter can ask the WBO for someone else
                  - then up to the WBO whether they accept or not
                  - so BJS's team could ask for Golovkin for example, doesn't have to be in the WBO top 15
                  - WBO would normally look for someone else in their rankings, but could make an exception if they chose to

                  2) If the fighter has a TV contract, and the TV network says no
                  - then the WBO will listen according to its rules, as long as the network accepts someone who the WBO deems to be acceptable
                  - so for example GGG has a deal with HBO, and HBO might not want a no-name (if we were talking about GGG's mandatory, which we're not, we're talking about BJS's, just using GGG's HBO contract as an example of how a TV network's say might look like)

So basically negotiated between the TV network, promoter, and WBO.

Saunders might not want Khurtsidze, and prefer Tommy Langford (WBO No.2) instead. WBO likely to accept that, but they also have the right to insist on Khurtsidze.

Saunders could also ask for GGG to be accepted (so go straight for the cash-out option) and the WBO would likely accept that too.

Yup. Canelo can take on the weakest beltholder in the division and then call himself a champion. Sounds about par for the course.....
