Tysons fans are always speculating why tyson left rooney . Well to me its obvious tyson left rooney becuse rooney was a slave driver he wanted to train every day of every year and had getting up at 6am to do 5 mile runs ever day . if rooney didnt push tyson so hard tyson wouldnt of left him .

Rooney did force Mike to train ****ing hard, and was abit of a prick. He would always have Mike going through 15-round WARS (with the likes of Mike Williams, Carl Williams, Jess Ferguson, Craig Payne and Oliver McCall) just days before his fights.
If the sparring wasn't a WAR, then Rooney threatened to cancel Mike's upcoming fight, and I heard Rooney often brought up Cus if Mike would feel like giving up (saying **** like Cus would be ashamed of him etc).

I doubt that he was made to do 15 round wars just a couple of days before his fights, what exactly is your source on this? It just doesn't sound like something a qualified professional trainer would do.

In one interview Tyson said he would only be a "slave" to Cus...Rooney was trying to replace him in that sense, and Tyson didn't approve.
You can't blame Rooney, he was just trying to keep Mike at a high level.
This is how he trained when Cus was alive, and this is how he trained to get to the title...things started to slide after he won the title and felt a sense of accomplishment, at least it seems that way.
Guys like Tyson need to train that way because of their style and attributes, like height...Frazier trained the same way, you never heard Joe complain, why? because he loved that ****.
Tyson would have only been able to train and fight like that until he was no more than 32, and that is pushing it...he is like a Running Back in the NFL.
I think Rooney should have given him the goals: Fight until you are 29, maybe 30, then retire with a **** load of money, live your life.
When you don't know when it will end, you kind of want out, but when you have a house at the end of the road, you work hard to get to that house in order to get your prize, Pie and sleep.Last edited by Abe Attell; 05-12-2006, 07:08 PM.

but rooney made a slave out of mike , all mike had to do to remain champ was was to use his jab, move his head and throw cobinations, he didnt have any competion back in 88 he didnt have to kill himself in the gym to beat his opponents, there was no around who was a threat to his title at the time .

it was in an interview that he sparred 15 rounds sometimes, but the rounds tailed off towards fight time, around 10.

I'm a Tyson fan, but it seems that he was at his best when he was focused and pushed. And in Tyson's case I think that the extreme training is what kept his life in order and when he lost that structure it seems people got close to Mike and took advantage of him.Either it be women or the Don King's of the world.
