Comments Thread For: Daily Bread Mailbag: Kovalev vs. Ward Post-Fight Mega Bag

i watched round 10 in slow motion..kov outlanded ward 24-14. he put on a jabbing clinic in that round. .yet all three judges said dre won that. .

that's one question i would like to ask bread, if ward couldn't make adjustments against kovs jab by the tenth round, how can he fix this in a rematch? the reach of kovalev is crazy and the power he shoots the jab with means ward cant parry it down, it penetrates his guard ..in round two he tried slipping the jab and threw a right but got clipped

basically ward had absolutely NO answer for kovs jab..another problem is wards right hand was non existent, you can count on one hand how many times he used it.

but i give ward props for his chin, better than i thought.

but that fight was good for boxing regardless of all the outrage, because this is destined to be a trilogy

I scored round 7,8,9,11 for Ward i.e. 116-111 Kovalev. Stretching it I can give for instance rd 3 and another swing round to Ward, making it 114-113 Kovalev. No way Ward won it, not by repeated reviews either, which as the author notes, contaminates scoring anyway.

I still stand by the fact that 114-113 is not a plausible scorecard to have in Ward's favour, you need to watch the fight without the bias without being intoxicated I'm sorry for whoever had it that way but you need to go back to the scoreboards and watch the fight again closely and analyze what is really happening and not what you think is happening.

The best you could do for Ward was a draw but even at that I still would think that would be an absolutely terrible decision but I wouldn't complain as much because I would say at the very least you didn't steal the belts off the real champion.

Dwyer analyzed the fight and put it right, Ward simply was being outclassed in the first portion of the fight and in the last half it became more competitive but it was not in anyway a whitewash Kovalev was still taking rounds in the last half of this fight.

as we all rewind and watch the fight multiple times, with different commentators, slow motion etc etc..it makes you understand the tough job judges have..they must turn in scores right away, we can go back and switch scores all we want. .my biggest disagreement with them is rd 3 and rd 10..they gave rd 3 to kovalev (i had ward) and they gave rd 10 to ward (i had kovalev).

This is pretty much how many feel about the fight. Ward did great to stem the tide late on, but seemed to be given some rounds simply because he wasn't getting dominated any more.

Malignaggi was indeed the worst offender, entirely focused on what Ward was doing and totally ignoring everything Kovalev was doing (sort of Kovalev throws 3 punches and only lands 1, so Ward wins that exchange on defence). The whole sky team had it for Ward, but I wonder how much Malignaggi influenced that - eg, replace Malignaggi's influence with Doug Fischer's, and I wonder who the sky team would have had then.

I think the best argument remains that if Ward had put in Kovalev's performance, and Kovalev had put in Wards's performance (ie roles reversed, Ward gets the knockdown in round 2), then just imagine how the crowd would have reacted if Kovalev had been given a unanimous 114-113 !!!!

They would have gone from complete confidence that their guy had it, to shock and outrage. There is no question in mind we would have seen soda-cups flying around in that scenario.

So basically Ward wins no matter which boxer he was in there. Fair ? Not. And that's the controversy right there. If roles were reversed and Ward had put in Kovalev's performance, with Kovalev then being given the W, I'd be equally incensed that Ward got robbed of a valid win.

De La Hoya said after Malignaggi's loss to Diaz in Texas that there needed to be an independent governing body to ensure that when fighters fight another competitor in their hometown or home country, neutral judges and referees are always selected.

Whether its Malignaggi/Diaz, John/Juarez, Ward/Kovalev, this will remain the case.

Bread took the easy way out again. Its becoming a pattern.

He couldnt just say I had it a draw. Or ward lost that fight.
Or ward came back and won that fight.

Jump on a ship and sink with it already.

Its no secret bread is friends with virgil hunter.
I will say this . I think he gave the three scenarios out of respect for hunter.

He said he can see a kovalev win or a draw which outweighs ward winning 2-1. He obviouly doesnt think ward won and doesnt wanna ruin his friendship with hunter.

Bread really thinks ward lost or didnt win

Kovalev was robbed! An independent boxing commission of 5 or 7 judges from foreign countries must be established to rule within 2 days on controversial decisions. Boxers deserve at least moral justice. It is really bad and disrespectful to rob somebody of his hard work and the health risks he puts in a fight. (Kovalev won the fight, any fair boxing judge will confirm it.)

Haha... I noticed that as well. He had Kovalev winning in 2/3 scenarios. I think its fair to say that he felt Kov won.
