Are 'tune ups' really that essential?

Im getting pretty tired of reading this crap day in day out that a fighter has got to have a 'tune up' before he fights a top opponent.
seriously what is the point, especially if you are fighting someone who these fighters could beat in their sleep? For example, garcia v vargas, is the experience of fighting vargas really going to make garcia that much better when he fights thurman? I'd argue that top quality sparring gets them more 'fight ready' than the 40 mins or less they spend in the ring against some bum, that doesnt prepare them for a top fighter at all. Why did ward need 4 tune ups before fighting kovalev? Why is jacobs insisting on a tune up against GGG? Is he suddenly going to be twice as dangerous when he fights ggg cause hes beaten up some bum before hand? Just seems a lot of fighters **** their pants when they get offered a big fight 'oh no i cant possibly fight someone good, i need a warm up fight against some no hoper' Just think the fighters these days exploit the word 'tune up' as a way of taking an easy fight and making some easy money.

Tunes up are very useful if you've been out of the ring for a while, and no, quality sparring does not replace a tune up. It basically comes down to activity. Fighters who are actively fighting several times a year are better off, provided they're not being subjected to beatings everytime they step into the ring.

Garcia is going to benefit from the tune up, but there's no reason he could've just remained active and been even better off. Jacobs will not benefit from a tune up, he's probably trying to buy off some time. Ward needed a tune up, but he's also getting the chance to properly grow into the weight class before facing Kovalev.

When did Ward have 4 tune ups for Kovalev you biased twat? Was Edwin Rodriguez a tune up for Kovalev? When he fought Smith he was still holding The Ring and WBA super middleweight titles.

Better to have tune ups and fight top opponents than not fight top opponents at all most would say.

well he had 4 tune ups for a top opponent, or what else was his excuse for not fighting someone with a pulse? Kovalevs not the only decent fighter at light heavy you dumb twat.

Fighters who have been inactive lose timing and punch resistance...I remember when Ray Leonard returned from a long layoff he said he was sparring without head gear to get use to getting hit again. Boxing comes down to timing and distance if you are off by .10 of a second you can be ko'd in boxing..tune ups and used to tune up your skills...i see no issue at all with it

yeah i understand if its a really long lay off, but dont you think the term is getting overused? Seems as if half the fights these days are classed as 'tune ups'

id prefer them not fighting bums, theres no reason garcia has to fight some useless guy spence whooped in order to prepare himself for thurman, it wont make a slight bit of difference. ANd i wont be tuning in at all for that dog****

Yet you had no issue with GGG fighting Monroe, Wade and Brook? I mention him because you act like he can do no wrong yet slam every other damn fighter in the sport for doing what he is doing and even slam them when they do more. Let these fighters remain active if they like hell you use the excuse for GGG why cant other fighters get that pass?
