not really, theres a lot more riding on this fight for ward than there is kovalev. If ward loses, hes finished. Hes so boring that as soon as he loses he becomes pretty much irrelevant, even with undefeated record hes been pretty much irrelevant until this fight. If kovalev loses, people will still tune into watch him. Hes not in danger of getting hurt, ward is.

It's probably just because Kovalev stepped into the ring, in front of Andre Ward's crowd, just after Andre Ward's win.
He hasn't been mentally defeated. He is showing respect for his hardest opponent yet. Don't look into things too much.
I reckon if you watch the weigh in, your logic would in fact argue that Ward has been mentally defeated. But again, don't look into it too much.
