I've always been under the impression there are two ways a lineage is broken - fighter retires or leaves the division. I remember the discussions about Erdei and people saying the lineage was broken when he went to cruiserweight.

Apparently there are different schools of thought here. For example get with Canelo, is the lineage now broken or not.

But then look at Dawson he went down to fight ward and then back up and lost his lineage to Stevenson

Well, Erdei and Canelo are the same case. Erdei took one fight at CW for a title. Now Canelo is taking atleast one fight at JMW for a title. Same thing.

The thing with Erdei is at the time he said he was leaving 175 and would campaign there. I think that's why people considered the lineage broken . As it turned out he changed his mind and moved back to 175.

I admit in these weird circumstances it gets very whacky. Again, I like the idea of to be the man you have to beat the man. Obviously there are cases were things get extremely out of whack. Normally it's pretty cut and dry.
