Will anybody give David Haye a break?

Or do you refuse to look at the bigger picture and criticise Haye on every decision he makes?

David Haye, as we all know, returned to boxing after a lengthy break, while having to overcome career threatening injuries. Yet these two points are ignored when "boxing fans" claim Haye is a laughing stock for his current choice of opponents.

David is practising an approach that many big name legendary heavyweights have done in the past including greats like George Foreman, Mike Tyson, and Evander Holyfield. So, David's approach or style of match making has precedence in boxing folk lore/history. When Foreman made his unlikely comeback to boxing after ten years away he faced nineteen questionable/lesser opponents. After Holyfield came back to boxing after his suspension from boxing on medical terms he faced and defeated Jeremy Bates, Vinny Maddalone, and passed their primes Lou Savarese, Frans Botha, and Brian Nielsen. After Tyson was released from prison and came back to boxing he faced Peter McNeeley, Buster Mathis, jr., Frank Bruno and Bruno Seldon. These guys certainly were not the best heavyweights of the talent rich 1990's. Looking at the current heavyweight picture who have Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder faced?? Nothing out of the ordinary in relation to how Haye has conducted his comeback this far.

    You will obviously.

    Good luck finding anyone else.

Sorry Haye but you rub people the wrong way when you started your HW campaign, it would take something special for the boxing public to firmly back you again.

I still am in the minority who actually believes the best of Haye will beat most of the top heavyweights now and would probably be the top guy it weren't for his injury (say what you want, it's a legitimate injury). I don't criticise the opponents Haye has fought so far as he's on the comeback trail but I will do if he continues with his selection of lesser opponents after the Briggs fight.

I'd like to see him fight the likes of Pulev and Glazkov before getting in there with Wilder, Ortiz, Joshua and Fury.

          haye's basically a conman. he's always been a conman.

he's got the right to rebuild, but that last guy looked like he either took a dive for money, or he took a dive because he didn't care to fight. that was bad news. shady, shady stuff. that guy took a dive, for whatever reason.

I understand him taking a few tuneups after being out for 3 years. I'd say taking the rubbish opponents he has been 3 or 4 months apart and treating them as big events is ridiculous from a boxing perspective, but nobody is forcing people to buy the tickets but they still do. He also said the reason for that is because he wanted to see if he can get through full training camps with his shoulder.

With that said, i don't think there's any need to fight Briggs now. Briggs is a bit of a name and was a good fighter when Haye was probably still in school. He's already proven he's levels above the type of guys he's been fighting. It say his 3rd fight back should really be against a top 10-15 kind of fighter.

But the problem with Haye is that he probably won't fight any decent fighter that could potentially ruin his big paydays. He will continue to knock out poor opposition until next summer when a potential big fight with AJ can happen, assuming AJ v Fury never does. There's too much money to be made from all parties for it not to happen. He and AJ appeal to the casual fans and people who don't even usually watch boxing, so put them together and it's huge. That's just the way Haye operates though, minimal risk until he gets the big fight.

It's a shame really because aside from all that, he is a talented fighter and could have been in some excellent fights.

^^ This post sums it up.

As a boxing fan, there isn't really a reason to 'give him a break', because he treats fans as if they're naïve. As is said here, he appeals to the casual fan and so does nice guy Joshua, so the fight will be a blockbuster regardless.. And it is a good fight, but Haye just doesn't deserve it.

I don't think Haye is even interested in fighting Joshua now. Why would he be? He's making millions of pounds beating up doormen. He doesn't need AJ.

The problem with Haye is that every fight he has ever been in at heavyweight, other than Wlad, has been a "tune-up".
