I grew up watching Gerry Cooney knock out his opponents with his trademark devastating left hook to the liver. If you have a video of the Ron Lyle bout, you know what I'm talking about. He's big, powerful and seemed to be a low-profile, humble person. The media drew parallels with him and Rocky Balboa, the Rocky movies was the 'in' thing in Hollywood back then. Cooney even used the Rocky movie soundtrack as his ring entrance towards the Larry Holmes fight. Larry spoiled the party and shattered what became infamously known as The Great White Hype!
Jerry Quarry was good, but Joe Frazier was simply too strong and Muhammad Ali was simply much, much better...he was in the wrong generation.
Rocky Marciano is the greatest white heavyweight boxer IMO.
