Comments Thread For: Valuev Explains Why The Klitschko Fight Never Happened

Former two-time WBA heavyweight champion Nikolai Valuev explained why he rejected a potential fight with Vitali Klitschko back in 2010. The seven-foot 'Russian Giant' as he was called, last fought in 2009 when he lost a close twelve round majority decision to David Haye in Germany. He walked away from boxing with a record of 50-2, 34KOs.

Not the first fighter to complain about a Klitschko contract

The 'slave contracts' aren't as bad as they sound. Yes, you're locked into fighting them, but you'd still get paid more money fighting them than fighting another opponent. It's a pretty sweet deal, you get to face both brothers, granted you were successful with the first, and make millions of dollars on top of that.

Fury is about to get paid handsomely for this Klitschko rematch.

Valuev just didn't want to take the risk of losing badly.

That's not how I remember it.

They offered him 1.5 million bucks and he said no, felt he was worth more. Then he tried to go back and make the fight again with the same deal later, but the Klitschkos had either booked a smaller venue or he'd lost his title (maybe both) so they only offered him like 800k or something.

He elected to take 100% of nothing instead.

Yea I remember that. I like Vit, but contracting a fighter to rematch your brother is beyond absurd.

You get locked into fighting them and they have control over venues etc.

With all the dirty tricks they pull, it's hard enough beating them once, in the rematch they will turn the dirty tricks up to 100, try and spike you, pay off judges and ref etc.

I have no problem with a rematch clause but it should be everything is in the champs favor that time, not they have to come fight you in your back yard again.

                  no respect for the sport.

Valuev is chicken, he didn't want to fight Vitali when he could have earned the payday of his career.
