Comments Thread For: Glazkov May Follow Roy Jones Path and Become Russian

Ukrainian fighter Vyacheslav "Czar" Glazkov, who won a bronze medal for his country in the 2008 Olympics, is following through with his desire to gain Russian citizenship.

Last September, former four division world champion Roy Jones Jr. gained citizenship is Russia with the approval of country President Vladimir *****.

According to Glazkov's co-promoter Cyril Pchelnikov, the boxer will more than likely carry the Russian flag when he enters the ring for the most important fight of his career, when he faces Charles Martin for the vacant IBF heavyweight championship on January 16th at the Barclays Center in New York.

Glazkov (a Russian in Ukraine where part of the country just joined Russia) is following in Roy Jones' footsteps (an American fleeing the IRS) by having Russian citizenship. Lmao. Boxingscene always has the lamest clickbait headlines.

You are ignorant. Ukraine has a large population of ethnic Russians that have lived in Ukraine for generations. They speak Russian, their kids attend Russian-speaking schools, etc. These ethnic Russians live in the eastern part of Ukraine, the location of the current conflict. They are not loyal to Ukraine, they are loyal to Russia. This wasn't a problem in the days of the Soviet Union because each region was unified under one government.

Since each country gained independence following the collapse of the Soviet Union, most Ukrainians feel that their country has been a puppet of Russia's. Several issues have caused internal strife among Ukrainians such as adding Russian as a second official language and the proliferation of Russian-speaking schools in the country. Ukraine's first attempt to break away from Russian influence was the Orange Revolution in 2004. A million Ukrainians gathered to protest their puppet government and demanded immediate elections. New elections were ordered and a new President was elected. Economic growth was slow and most Ukrainians grew weary of abandoning Russia.

This second wave of Ukranian independence arose from their previous President rejecting EU membership (at the behest of Russia) even though the overwhelming majority of Ukrainian citizens wanted to join. That President was ousted and took refuge in Russia, Ukrainians elected a new President, and Russia invaded eastern Ukraine with the support of the Ethnic Russian population that has dominated that region for generations.
