Comments Thread For: HBO Exec on Kovalev-Ward, Kovalev-Stevenson Possibilities

During a recent media event for the Sergey Kovalev vs. Jean Pascal rematch, which takes place on January 30th on HBO, Kovalev's promoter Kathy Duva said that her ambitious goal for 2016 was for her fighter to face Pascal, Adonis Stevenson and cap off the year against Andre Ward.

IMO Kovalev-Stevenson has lost its luster. Stevenson is the lineal champ. But, he's done next to nothing since winning the title. While Kovalev has dominated the top guys in the division. Honestly, its gotten to the point where Stevenson is basically a non-factor in the division.

at this point i just want to see him KTFO for closure. preferably by kovalev, but beterbiev or browne would be fine too

I think Haymon is having Stevenson hold that WBC title for Marcus Browne.

It's a depressing thought that Kovalev might not get either Stevenson nor Ward next year.

I'm pretty sure outside of Hopkins and Pascal kovalev has only fought sxrubs, that have done nothing since. Fonfara, Stevenson, Bieterbiev, are clearly the top guys at the weight. Pascal just got handed a gift decision his last fight. The only reason he's fighting krusher again is because kovalwv can't draw worth craps and they need pascals name recognition in Canada.

well stevenson declined to fight both hopkins and pascal, so if kov has done little according to you, stevenson has done even less

he has one good win against fonfara and that's pretty much it. bellew, cloud and dawson's corpse are no better than cleverly, campillo and sillah

                  Disappointing interview.

I was looking for one sentence only.

"If we lose the purse bid then Kovalev can fight on Showtime".

It makes sense to let Kovalev off the hook for that fight. He'd become a bigger star. And I am not sure a lot of people are giving Stevenson a shot. Why block one of the two best fights in boxing?

                  SMH...

Been telling folks the Stevenson vs Kovalev fight will never happen. The best chance was when both were under the same network and now that Haymon has him it just doesn't have the same huge money that a May vs Pac fight can get two networks to copromote.
Stalling the fight has actually helped make it more anticipated and gain more money than it would back a couple year's ago but like a poster said, it's lost a bit of it's buzz.
It's better if Duva and Nelson just tell the fans the straight way instead of all this "hoping" or non compliant answer's and just say the fight ain't happening.
HBO has done a poor job IMO of boosting Kov's allure, the man should be a star. Has a mean streak Ivan Drago type personality, get's KO's, very exciting, and has some controversy behind him which sells.
