Comments Thread For: Luis Ortiz: I'm Preparing Like My Career is on The Line

By Jake Donovan - Luis “King Kong” Ortiz boasts a rich amateur pedigree, is undefeated as a pro and through his combination of speed, power and southpaw stance is a hellish matchup for any heavyweight in the world. Yet the perception that he has more to prove than his upcoming opponent - Bryant Jennings, who is coming off of a one-sided loss and an eight-month layoff - is indeed accurate.

It’s also the scenario Ortiz prefers heading into any fight.

“I’m 100% ready for this opportunity,” Ortiz (23-0-0-1NC, 20KOs) told krikya360.com of his December 19 showdown with Jennings, which airs live on HBO from Turning Stone Casino in Verona, New York. “I’m preparing for this fight like my career is on the line.”

Interestingly enough, the unbeaten Cuban southpaw – who now lives and trains in Miami - was prepared for this very matchup to take place two months ago. It’s why he agreed to appear on the undercard of a Pay-Per-View telecast topped by Gennady Golovkin’s 8th round destruction of David Lemieux in their middleweight unification bout. Necessity is a powerful thing it drives people to do crazy things, hopefully his daughter got better and he proves to be more than a bum beater, and if he does the HW division sure is getting primed for some fun match ups. Can't believe I just said that about HW by the way it's been a looooooooooong time.

I dont think Wilder and even Fury will ever fight Ortiz. Hes verry good but brings not mutch money and attention to the table. He has not enough time to become popular enough for such a fight. Even if he becomes mandatory he would propably need to wait at least 2 years just like povetkin. And then he would be to old propably.

I'm not entirely impressed with Ortiz. Apparently, he needs the juice to not come into the ring looking like a tub. Add to it the fact that he's 36 and you have...meh.

Is Ortiz any good? Let's find out.

Why not Ortiz for Wilder? Slow fat guy would be a great KO for the Wild. Jennings is way too boring and dull for the limelight. Both fighters might be just fringe contenders in a diluted weak division going on 2 decades now. Roy Jones jr. held the heavyweight title for a while that is how weak the heavies have become.

What are talking about? Roy Jones just fought Ruiz, one of the most pathetic Titleholders of all time, thats it. Thats the only fight he had at heavyweight. Even an fat out of shape toney outboxed John Ruiz.
Ortiz would knock Wilder the bumcrusher out im 100% confident of that. Ortiz is no slow fat guy im telling you. Just watch Ortiz vs. Jennings im sure it will be an impressive win for Ortiz.

Wilder would hit the slower Ortiz at will and KO Ortiz. Ortiz is too short to fight Wilder effectively. Jennings should beat Ortiz on a decision saturday. Ortiz beating Jennings would be a shock in the USA.

I don't think so. Ortiz hasn't faced the best opposition but in the fights I've watched him, his amateur pedigree is evident and he's very heavy handed. I think Ortiz's superior boxing skills will stymie Jennings 'ordinary' offense and defense and he'll gun for the big KO.

I would honestly be surprised if Jennings emerged the victor.

                  My thoughts exactly!

Jennings is a guy who's fit and has a high output for the HW div but Ortiz is superior in every category. It will be a good fight i think as long as it lasts. I don't see Jennings getting out of this one conscious, if he does there might be a few knockdowns with a majority decision.

I really don't know how to call this fight from limited footage of either man. Jennings has the workrate and I think will look to get on the inside and fight Ortiz there. Ortiz wasn't gone past 8 and that was 5 years ago and he doesn't look as fit as Jennings so I think he'll tire late on and allow Jennings to bag some more rounds pushing it to a close decision. The other way I see it going is Ortiz KOs him but I'll definitely be punting on ze draw.
