Golovkin's exclusive HBO contract may technically be up now or after one more fight (although I'm sure he will resign). I made a thread about it not long ago. Basically i referenced an espn article from 2014 that referenced golovkin's new 4 fight deal with HBO. Golovkin has had four fights since that article.

This is why Kovalev couldn't go into a purse bid for the Stevenson fight supposedly cuz HBO locks them up contractually so they can lowball fighters & stop fights in these situations. Its effed up cuz the fighters 1)lose money & 2)could lose their belt & 3)hurt their legacy by not fighting these sometimes potentially epic fights.

I was wondering when the WBA would enforce this.
Golovkin was supposed to fight Jarod Fletcher in 2014 (who was the mandatory challenger to Golovkins Regular WBA belt). However Golovkin was promoted to Super Champion on June 2014, and so he was granted permission to fight someone else, and he fought Daniel Geale instead.
Fletcher would then fight Danny Jacobs for the vacant regular belt in August 2014 (16 months ago).
The rules for the Super Champion, according the WBA website, is that they must face the regular champion within 18 months of the regular champion getting crowned. Which would mean that Golovkin and Jacobs should be due.

Just for reference, the only reason Jacobs is the WBA "regular" champ is because the WBA ordered golovkin to face a guy named Jarod Fletcher (who is a horrible fighter) and golovkin and his team knew that he would get crucified if he took that fight. The WBA realized they could get another champion with and sanctioning fees by having Jacobs knock out fletcher instead of golovkin. As we all can agree on, the WBA is horrible.

That would be fine, and I dont think anyone would gripe, if they were consistent in enforcing that requirement. But they arent. I cant really think of a recent time when they enforced a super-regular mando. They certainly didnt do it with Floyd, as a matter of fact Thurman complained about that many times. They havent even vacated Floyds 147 and 154 titles yet lol
But be that as it may, if this happens I hope K2 and HBO can work something out for GGG to take 1 fight off if K2 loses the bid.Last edited by OnePunch; 12-06-2015, 08:46 PM.
