Rooting for the underdog
The main even features the undefeated Christian “Chimpas” Gonzalez with 11 victories and no defeats. He is being built as one of Golden Boys next prodigies. His whole family came to the weigh ins in matching team shirts riddled with sponsorship logos. His management team, and the matchmaker that set up this fight were all part of his entourage.
In the corner opposite—Alejandro Ochoa: 7 wins, 10 defeats.
On paper, it looks like a set up fight. But there is more to “Alex” than meets the eye. The previous 5 fights he won came recently in the past 16 months. Every opponent he fought, he was slated to lose. 3 of those victories have come from undefeated fighters, most notably his last fight at the StubHub center against another “up and coming” prospect.
Alex is homeless. He spends his days training and coaching in some of the gyms that he also sleeps in. Two weeks ago, Alex’s younger brother Julio was shot dead while attending a party in Fontana. He was 20 years old.
Knowing that this is what his brother would have wanted, Alex did not cancel his fight but he kept pushing, thru an obvious emotional and physical obstacle.
At yesterdays weigh ins, Alex paid the price. A contract weight was set over a month ago at 131 pounds, however Alex woke up at 138. By the time of the weigh in, he got down to 134. This warranted n automatic 20% fine from the commission—10% of that going to Chimpas’ team. And here in is where more drama continues:
Chimpas’ handlers stated that they would return the 10% back to Alex, but they wanted Alex to continue to dry out back to 131 that day. Alex has a real chance to beat Chimpas.
“If he does not make 131,” the matchmaker stated, “even if he wins, we will never get him a fight at Golden Boy again.”
For a 7-10 fighter, this is a huge opportunity and he wouldn’t want to throw that away over a couple of pounds.
But those “couple of pounds” was not coming off.
After 2 hours in the gym, covered in sweat balms, sauna suits, and on the treadmill, Alex finally got down to 131.8 pounds.
But that wasn’t enough. His opposition’s handlers stated that a .8 weight difference was too much of a weight disadvantage for their fighter to risk because it was already a risky fight. Alex has nothing to lose, while Chimpas has everything to lose. Forget that he has no home. Forget that he lost his brother. Lose the estimated half-pound and then after everything else has been lost, maybe he will get a chance to win.
So back to work he went, and 30 minutes later he was back at 131 flat.
The whole time, Alex didn’t mutter a word or complaint. He knew what the contract weight was at, and he didn’t make an excuse though everyone around him was.
At the end of it all, Alex only had this to say:
