Comments Thread For: Andre Ward: Kovalev Better Than GGG, Bigger Challenge

Former super middleweight champion Andre Ward (28-0, 15KOs) is getting prepared for a very big 2016.

He recently signed a new multi-fight deal with HBO. Ward is moving up to the light heavyweight division next year. Ward plans to have at least three fights, with the third being an HBO Pay-Per-View showdown with IBF/WBA/WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev (28-0-1, 25KOs).

They only have to refer to Golovkin dropping Kovalev to do that.

Ward using Golovkin's name to market himself.

Andre Ward seems to have this reflex response where he brings up Golovkin every time people stop talking about him.

How can you say this without knowing what questions he's answering?

... Ward just had an epiphany... but he still talks Golovkin, though.

He was asked if Kovalev was a harder fight than Golovkin at the media roundtable.

                He gave the correct answer.

I would have rather asked him about Beterbiev (as compared to Kov)...

Kovalev is the king of a division that's 2 weight classes above. Good big fighter > good small fighter. Is this news somehow?

As for which of them is better, that's just his opinion. There was an article a few years ago about Golovkin dropping Kov in sparring. Sparring is not the same as an actual fight, I'm just reinforcing that it's just Ward's opinion.

I do find the irony in him saying "Moving up in weight is never an easy thing to do."
