Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya suffered a big hit to his company when the year started. The majority of his fighters left Golden Boy to get involved with the Premier Boxing Champions [PBC] series. Nearly all of those fighters were managed/advised by Al Haymon, who started PBC.

As the year continued, two De La Hoya's biggest names - Lucas Matthysse and David Lemieux - suffered knockout defeats in the respective title fights.
