WBC Just Proved What Belts Mean These Days

Just pathetic what they just did with Cotto's belt ..I can understand stripping Cotto for not defending it but to grant Canelo the belt of he wins is some foul sh* t !!

They allowed Floyd to keep his belt for several, yrs with out defending it yet Cotto gets stripped because he refuse to pay further sanctioning fees when he just paid 800k to GGG to step aside ..

Cotto sidestepped his mandatory (understandable because of more $$) in GGG, drops the belt, then Cotto fans will disgrace GGG for not fighting any true tests

    Give me a break.

"They robbing Cotto doe!" Should of just fought his mandatory if GGG is an unproven worthless challenger, would of been a good tune-up to a tested fighter like Canelo who fought Floyd, right?

That $800k was strictly to GGG since he was the mandatory. The belt obviously had significant value to Miguel Cotto since he agreed to pay almost a million dollars to have GGG step aside. The $300k was just the standard fee every title holder pays in order to keep their belt based on a percentage of their purse.

The WBC aren't the ones to be blamed here, Cotto wanted to keep the belt w/o facing his mandatory, that's the reason it cost so much.

Belts should be won and lost in the ring. Not in some office.

Yeah but saying that if Canelo wins he becomes WBC champ ..Really ? This would be another belt they basically hand to Canelo

When the contracts were signed, both Canelo/Cotto agreed to pay the sanction fees. Canelo is still agreeing to pay the sanctioning fee where as Cotto so far only paid a step-aside fee. Normally a fighter fights his mandatory and there is no need for a hefty step-aside fee. As Dan Rafael just brought up, Tyson once paid Lewis $4.5mill to step-aside when he was Tyson's mando.

Being stripped for not agreeing to pay the basic sanction fee is not much different than if Cotto failed to make 160lbs and then Canelo would still be fighting for the title.

I've always believed the worth of the belts depend on how the fighters treat them.

These fighters coming up don't seem to give a damn about the belts.

The belt gave him the upper hand in negotiations vs. Canelo and would entice Floyd Mayweather to come back for a 50th fight. If the WBC enforced their rules in the first place, the Geale fight or this fight wouldn't be happening for the WBC title. I'm not applauding them for a business decision. They just wanted a piece of the biggest fight in boxing and Cotto told them to **** off.
