Comments Thread For: Referee Explains Why He Saved Lemieux From Golovkin

NEW YORK, NY - In the highly anticipated main event on Saturday night, WBA/IBO and WBC "Interim" World Champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) added the IBF Middleweight Title to his collection with an exhilarating performance against former IBF Middleweight World Champion, David Lemieux (34-3, 31 KOs), culminating in an eighth round technical knockout victory on Saturday, October 17, at Madison Square Garden with a sold out crowed of 20, 548 fight fans.

On one hand the stoppage came at an odd moment since it was following a bodyshot that wasn't severe enough for DL to take a knee and DL was still returning fire.

The real problem is DL looked directly at the referee right after that bodyshot landed. It may have just been an instinctive reaction to pain to glance to his side but he looked right at the ref and the ref seemed to take that as a signal.

I wanted to see DL on his ass but I admit the ref did the right thing: the fight was practically over. No point letting DL take unnecessary punishment, he still has years and fights to look forward to.

Yep, ref did right to stop it. Gave Lemieux every chance but he wasn't effectively in the fight and was going to get damaged. Golovkin should have been pulled for throwing and landing after the knockdown, though. Didn't matter, outcome wise, but enforcing the rules is any ref's only job in there apart from knowing when one guy's taken enough. Golovkin is the all round package. Power and technique. He's a great fighter and is already the undisputed champ because the winner of Cotto and Canelo (which will be a terrific battle itself, I'm sure) is not going to share a ring with Gennady. I'm sure of that too.

It's a unification fight on PPV in sold out MSG. That has to mean something. Fighters compromise their safety by putting on gloves, after that it's all a matter of judgement. I wouldn't want to see Lemieux getting hit while being defenseless, but it didn't come to that. Lemieux was firing back, and he's no Malignaggi. It's not incomprehensible (although extremely unlikely) that Lemieux could've wobbled Golovkin with one of his bombs and gone in for the kill. True, Lemieux was losing every minute of every round and getting beat up, but the stoppage tainted an otherwise remarkable victory... But, on the plus side, this is a big present for Lemieux. At least he can claim he finished the fight on his own two feet, and even hint that he was going to come back strong in later rounds...

Moot point. GGG should have been DQ'd for blantant cheap shot in the 6 round after DL took a knee. Not even a warning. Show's you the judgement of that official. The stoppage was too early and it was too early on the Chocolate Tito fight too.

It was an odd fight, there was the potential DQ which imo should have been a points deduction and then, although Lem had been beaten from pillar to post, it was an odd moment to stop the fight. I can understand if Lem had gone down for a second time. Oh well, GGG was dominating anyway and Lem needs to get back to fighting b level guys.

A DQ would have been excessive. The DQ in the Abraham-Dirrell fight has gone down in history for the pathetic scene it created. And that was an innocent mistake during a slip. GGG was in kill-mode.

Taking a point and giving DL extra time to recover would have been wise since that was a real damaging, potentially KO punch.

Inconsistency is bad. You can't have some refs ignoring shots on the ground completely and others instantly disqualifying.

Mismatch from the beginning, their isn't a challenge in the division for GGG he should quit wasting everyone's time and move up in weight, tonight he beat a guy weighing what 175 ? And he wants Ward to face him at 164 lmao, dude should man up. No way I pay to watch him against Canelo and Cotto, two glorified junior mids fighting at 160.

Canelo is not goof enough for the top dog at 160, Cotto will never be competitive either. These potential GGG match jobs are a waste of time, Cotto should just give him the belt.
