In America specifically, Canelo could become the one, only because there's a huge Mexican American, Mexican and other Hispanic --except Cuban and Puerto Rican-- boxing fan base. This, coupled with the fact that he looks like an Irish guy and he is very young, strong, charismatic AND FIGHTS LIKE A MAN, I MEAN HIS FIGHTS ARE ALWAYS FUN TO WATCH unlike the likes of Mayweather and his imitators/wannabes who avoid trading and clinch super-excessively instead of fighting back, and also sucker punch, use the elbows illegally, rabbit punch and many other tricks that are never ever penalized, not even by a verbal warning by his sold-out American referee friends.
But Canelo is not American, I mean not even Mexican American and he doesn't even speak English. That is a HUGE liability for him. For Americans and most other English-speaking countries, the superstar always has to be an American. De la Hoya was Mexican American but that was enough anyways, in his era. Even when he fought Floyd, he was the biggest draw by far. DLH was the one that sold most of the tickets and PPV sales and AFAIK he got twice or more the purse than Floyd did, something that many commentators and Floyd fans tend to forget easily, and pretend it didn't even happen.
