Comments Thread For: “Fighting Words” — Danny Garcia: A Champ Starts Over

by David P. Greisman - Danny Garcia hasn’t lost yet, though he hasn’t won everyone over yet either. And those doubters existed even before he officially moved from the junior welterweight division up to welterweight.

That debut at 147 came this past Saturday against Paulie Malignaggi. Garcia came out with the victory once again, winning by ninth-round technical knockout. He remains undefeated, at least so far as the record books read, despite what his critics and some of the sport’s other observers believe.

Yet even his most ardent supporters should acknowledge that Garcia still has plenty to prove in his new weight class.

Garcia actually hadn’t fought at 140 for more than 16 months. He fought twice afterward slightly above the junior-welterweight limit. While that made him by definition a welterweight, he definitely had not jumped into those ranks just yet, not when his opponents were still from the 140-pound division or below. Malignaggi truly was a welterweight, albeit an undersized, underpowered one. Garcia won clearly and won easily.

That’s one win at 147, and that one win wasn’t enough to show whether Garcia will be able to compete against the other contenders — never mind the titleholders — at welterweight.

His reputation has long been on a rollercoaster ride.

Garcia transitioned from being a prospect to being considered a contender to challenging for a world title very quickly. In 2011, at 23 years old, he outpointed an aged Nate Campbell and won a decision over Kendall Holt. By 2012, four days after his 24th birthday, he stepped in with faded veteran Erik Morales and left with his first world title. Then he knocked out Amir Khan to unify two belts, and next came a demolition of Morales in a contractually mandated rematch. [Click Here To Read More]

"Some" people thought Herrera should have had his gloves raised? MOST did. This really bugs me, because it's going to get worse with time. Every week, every month, every year that passes, more and more it's going to become "some" people when it was most.

I thought Garcia looked a lot worse against Paulie than I expected.

All I see it's haters posting after this thread: Barclays Center, Brooklyn, New York - Danny "Swift" Garcia (31-0, 18 KOs) made his move to the welterweight division, to break down and stop two-time world champion Paulie "The Magic Man" Malignaggi (33-6, 7 KOs) in the ninth round. Boom you all haters can't stop the King Garcia. Haters in 3,2,1......:*******:

it's just a matter of time before that 147 is in the dominion of Swift, you hater really think Porter or Thurman can beat Swift? Porter fought a guy on 24hr. notice a few months back, he was gonna fight a tailor made Roberto Garcia, the same tailor made come forward fighter they were gonna feed to Errol Spence too, Bundu, Diaz, Collazo, Soto Karass also tailor made for that guy that's barking Mayweather's name, those guys have been fed come forward fighters their whole careers and when they didn't fight a come forward fighter they had trouble or they lost, like Porter did, Swift already beat one of the best come forward fighters in the world in Matthysse, matter of fact i'd say the best since Matthysse just beat Ruslan, meanwhile those 147 fighters are fighting scrubs Swift is beating guys that are still headlining boxing cards on HBO, Showtime and PBC, Swift has the best resume in the 147 division, aside of course from MayVinci and Pac, Swift has been fighting crafty boxers, ****ers, headbutters (Herrera and PEDerson) and guys on PEDs (Peterson and Morales) his whole career, untouched, unblemished and no scars, Swift is the next King of 147, the current Prince of Boxing, hate it or love it haters, deal with it, get used to it, and stay hating my friend

Garcia is an overrated clown. Does this look like the track record of an elite fighter?

              - Kendall Holt - SD win, very competitive
              - Amir Khan - KO win, but was getting beat up until he landed a miracle left hook
              - Erik Morales - UD and KO win, Morales was faded and shot
              - Zab Judah - UD win, barely won
              - Mauricio Herrera - MD win, complete home-cooking BS and it should have been a UD loss for Garcia
              - Rod Salka - KO win, really? This bum who should be shining shoes?
              - Lamont Peterson - MD win, very close and could have gone either way
              - Paulie Malignaggi - TKO win, Paulie was done and past his prime

This is the guy people think is great and a future superstar?

All those wins look good enough to me. No one else is doing it except the guys in your pic. Other than Pac/May who in the division has better resume, Bradley maybe, and thats a strong maybe, its (mainly based on him beating Lamont and Nate first, plus Marquez). A lot of people here would call him elite based on one clear win on a 40yr old Marquez and an ugly one on Pac, so "elite" is extremely relative.

                  Why leave out Matthysse?
