Comments Thread For: Quigg: I Let Martinez Get Confident, I Set Him Up For KO

Scott Quigg blasted Kiko Martinez away inside two rounds to better Carl Frampton’s result against the rugged Spaniard.

The WBA super-bantamweight’s long-time rival Frampton had defeated Martinez twice but not with the ferocity that Quigg delivered.

The 26-year-old initially did damage with a right uppercut that buckled Martinez’s knees, spelling the beginning of the end to the delight of a partisan crowd in Manchester.

Sensing an early finish, Quigg unleashed a barrage of right and left hooks to bludgeon the tough ex-IBF champion.

Quigg has just joined the same illustrious group of fighters, which also includes golovkin, that allow their opponents to tee off on them, for reasons unknown..

A more accurate assessment would be he landed a good shot but Martinez had him under pretty tough pressure in the opening round.

I wonder if the fight with Frampton will get made, especially now that it has come out that The Jackal had trouble making weight?

Frampton and Quigg could potentially happen @126 because Quigg isn't a small guy himself. They might leave that match-up for the future if Frampton can no longer make 122.

            122lb
            WBA/WBO: Rigo
            WBC: Santa Cruz
            IBF: Frampton

            126lb
            WBA: Cuellar
            WBO: Russell
            WBC: Lomachenko
            IBF: Selby

I don't think the UK is capable of dominating these two divisions.

Rigo has scared them all away from 122. First Donaire got beaten out of 122, then Santa***** has headed off to 126, now Frampton has mentioned it and if all Quigg has is Rigo at 122 he'll be off to 126 as well.
Trouble is 126 is not any easier and they will probably come running back to 122 with their tails between their legs just like Donaire.

It's a shame too because Rigo is almost 35 years old. I don't see an older man dominating a lower weight class for long. Who knows when we'll start to see slippage, and he has the kind of style that can't really afford much. Besides Donaire, none of these guys dared fight him while he was at his best.

Kiko is a difficult fighter to tame, he fights at a rapid pace and finds a way to get on the inside and goes to work. the first round was expected but the second round was a surprise, Quigg came out barrels smoking and fought fire with fire, that uppercut he set up was the beginning of the end. Good stuff.
