Comments Thread For: Scott Quigg: Hopefully Now I Will Get Some Credit

Scott Quigg produced a stunning second round knockout win over Kiko Martinez in his WBA World Super Bantamweight title defence at the Manchester Arena.

Martinez was the aggressor in the opening round but Quigg floored the former IBF king with a superb uppercut. The Spaniard got to his feet but Quigg swarmed all over him with a barrage of heavy shots that sent Martinez tumbling once more and although he beat the count, the fight was waved off.

I said Scott Quigg was underrated and that Kiko would be shocked by Scott's strength and power. Could be that lots of tough fights have had an accumulative effect on Martinez and it might have been a factor here but there's no denying the explosiveness shown by Quigg and the emphatic nature of the finish. After the troubles Carl Frampton had to overcome tonight they're talking a step up to featherweight for the Belfast fighter but I'm sure the Quigg camp would be quite happy to oblige him at 126. Thing is, Quigg has a stronger hand now than before in any negotiations. With super bantam belts on the line or non-title at feather, I don't see that McGuigan could justify a demand for more than a 50-50 purse split and I believe Quigg's side would be happy at that just to get it on. Yes please.

I dont think it was necessarily an accumulation of tough fights for Kiko, Quigg just executed his gameplan beautifully. The 1st rd, Quigg looked to establish his jab and use movement while Kiko pressed. The 2nd, Kiko looked to continue pressing, i think it surprised everyone when Quigg stepped inside on Kiko like that, i think he expected Quigg to use his legs as he did in the 1st..Quiggs left set up that uppercut and that was clean

Great shot, and a great way to finish. However I'm not going to fall into the trap of thinking of Scott quigg as a monstrous puncher because he is not. He deserves credit for beating a good opponent in Kiko.
In England they have a tendency to hype certain fighters too much too soon and others who deserve it, not enough.
