Comments Thread For: Arturo Gatti - Reflecting Back on The Legend of 'Thunder'

By Thomas Gerbasi - Nearly six years after his tragic and still mysterious death, the reminders of Arturo Gatti are still there.

First there was a trip to Jersey City. It’s a melting pot that didn’t raise him ?that honor went to Montreal ?but it did adopt him, treating him as one of their own, a sports franchise with gloves, a mouthpiece, and the kind of heart Springsteen always sang about.

Then there was the Hall of Fame induction of Ray “Boom Boom?Mancini. Before Gatti thrilled fans on Saturday nights, Mancini did it on Saturday afternoons, and when it came time for voters to decide if these two action heroes deserved a plaque in Canastota, there was a debate about whether their body of work warranted it. Maybe not if you go strictly by wins and losses, but in terms of impact, both delivered above and beyond the call of duty. Both were inducted.

Finally, a quick look through some old boxes turned up my daughter’s autograph book, and wedged between an eclectic group of signatures that included Buzz Lightyear and Minnie Mouse alongside Wladimir Klitschko and Vernon Forrest was Arturo Gatti’s name. In January of 2004, Gatti held a press conference to promote his upcoming bout with Gianluca Branco. My daughter, eight years old at the time, wanted to see her favorite fighter, “Artoono?Gatti. Against all sense of professionalism, I brought her to the presser, and Main Events?publicist at the time, Donald Tremblay, graciously let her in. Gatti, in the midst of personal issues, often stopped to shed a few tears in the midst of talking about his fight. But when my daughter approached him after the Q&A was done, he managed that unforgettable smile and a signature, making a little girl’s day. [Click Here To Read More]

        A true fighter

In today's " business of fighting" world of clutching, grabbing, dancing and generally avoiding a fight for 12 rounds( Mayweather) Gatti is a remimder of true fighters. Of heart and the spirit of fighting. Putting it on the line instead of hand picking opponents when they are undersized, beat up already, too slow, ( Mayweather, Mayweather, Mayweather) in order to preserve an "0" that is meaningless.
Gatti will be remembered as a true fighter. Pac, Cotto, Canelo, Crawford. Kovalev, Golovkin , Marquez And a few others will earn their way in also. Regardless of the record it was honest. Gatti didn't manipulate his way into a meaningless record to prove " he's a man". He went out and proved it every fight. As long as they continue to allow fraudsters( Mayweather) to get away with " not fighting" for 12 rounds and applaud him for it the true majesty of this sport is lost. These men are and were FIGHTERS.... Floyd and the rest well they are just side shows. They ain't fighters...... Ya gotta fight to be a fighter

Grow the **** up you imbecilic child. This is about Gatti, don't bring your pathetic little whiny Floyd bitterness into this thread.

Christ, does it never stop?!? Can't we go anywhere without these goddamn little girls crying bitterness tears in every single ****ing thread, no matter how unrelated? This has become just beyond absurd.

When Floyd fought Gatti I didn't see any dancing or avoiding. Arturo got severely punished and thoroughly had his butt handed to him by a real fighter. Not by a side show.

Gatti was quite average and got battered badly

Gatti was very average who took terrible punishment in the ring. Gatti-Ward was between two average limited skills white guys. Ward was very average as was gatti. If not white both of these guys are never heard of in boxing.

An underrated boxer. People who never put on a pair of gloves in their lives think if youre not on a p4p list then you must be s**t. If you aint top 10 in a division you are a bum.

He could box and he could brawl so you would think that he would be appreciated more than he is. Thats boxing fans for you, never satisfied.

R.I.P Gatti, glad you made it into the HOF, you earned it.
