Comments Thread For: Artur Beterbiev Wants a Piece of Sergey Kovalev

Rising light heavyweight contender Artur Beterbiev (8-0, 8 KOs) does not want to wait. The talented Russian feels he is already prepared to fight his fellow countryman, IBF/WBA/WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev (27-0-1, 24 KOs).

The two boxers faced each other twice in the amateurs. In both fights, Beterviev came out as the winner, but Kovalev claims that he was robbed by the judges.

Beterbiev is with Haymon. Not happening with Kovalev hiding underneath Duva's skirt

            I love this.

Since the eastern europeans were allowed to fight pro it has always been them vs Americans kind of like in Rocky.

But now we have to monster lhws from Russia with a little bad blood between them. I'm not sure that's ever happened before on a world class stage?

This would be a war for the ages.

No chance. He could have him fight Stevenson, Fonfora, Chavez Jr, Rodriguez, Alvarez, Oosthuzen, and Bute (if he comes back) on a PBC platform instead

Beterbiev is ranked #2 by the IBF, #4 by the WBA, and #5 by the WBO (also #4 by the WBC).

HBO's got nothing to do with it; once Beterbiev gets by his June 12th fight, he's going to be the new top challenger for the IBF, an organization that actually enforces it's mandatories (the WBA's three-belt structure likely doesn't force the fight, and its anyone's guess how the WBO would act)

Fight goes to purse bid, HBO bids against PBC (with PBC expected to have deeper, willing pockets), and Kovalev likely has to vacate, walking out on another meaningful fight.

yup. Duva's decision to keep Kovalev on HBO might have put his career at a stand still. Who is he going to fight when Haymon has most of the other notable LHWs?
