Showtime, in an attempt to bolster their boxing franchise, saw a fight that HBO was ready to air on the open market, ponied up the money for the fight, and Stevenson was able to make significantly more money for making the move, after HBO wouldn't commit to him with a longterm deal (Hopkins fight fell apart over B-Hop wanting a 75/25 split of the money, which Duva was glad to give up for the fight, which is another story).
Team Kovalev, seeing the Stevenson fight in the offing, decided to not only duck the fight, but chose to stick with HBO for LESS money than he could've picked up for taking on Stevenson (let alone the type of money Kovalev could've commanded as the WBC/WBA/IBF/WBO/Ring/IBO light heavyweight champion), while also only having crap fights to look forward to.
how **** justify that in their own mind is beyond me.
