Comments Thread For: Ricky Hatton: Mayweather-Pacquiao Damaged Boxing

Manchester legend Ricky Hatton was among the many who was disappointed by the May 2nd "Fight of the Century" between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao. Mayweather won a twelve round unanimous decision at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Hatton faced both fighters during his career. He was stopped by Mayweather in ten rounds in 2007 and got knocked out in two rounds by Pacquiao in 2009. He retired afterwards the Pacquiao loss and made a brief comeback a few years later.

People want knockouts.. That wasn't gonna happen. This was two way past their prime legends having a good, close tactical battle. Mayweather ran & jabbed, Pacquiao chased and threw lefts. I didn't really expect anything else.

Yes Pacquiao could have cut the ring off way better (or gotten his NSAID's) and Mayweather could had cut back on the clinching and elbows, but it is what it is.

A rematch would be a better fight because it would force them both to adjust to the new tactics they would use.

As all of us know, Floyd - because of excessive holding and constant running - has been singlehandedly blamed by the boxing and general public for the boringness of the so-called "Fight of the Century" during which he managed to lose 4 rounds to a smaller man (5 inch reach disadvantage, 2 inch height disadvantage) who medical verification has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt...

was fighting with only one arm.

Now, Mayweather is trying to re-write history by manipulating public perception via the deceptive act of bogusly blaming Pacquiao for making the fight a boring dud. Specifically, he keeps blaming Pac's not being honest about his injury pre-fight for the reason for the fight's boringness.

THINK. The problem is: The more Mayweather blames Pacquiao's shoulder injury for the fight's boringness the more he admits that he indeed beat a one armed fighter, hence tainting and...

making meaningless his (Floyd Mayweather's) so-called "win."

Yeah! Mayweather destroyed boxing with his running and hugging. Floyd never has been and never will be a fighter. He proved it on that pathetic night.

True. For the 60-70 % who bought the fight not knowing anything about Floyds style didn't see this coming.. Floyd has always been a safety first fighter

Anyone who follows the sport and Floyds career knew that it wasn't going to be a Gatti-Ward or Pac vs Marquez...

I'm more upset over the fact that Roach and Pac didn't have anything prepared to prevent Floyd from pot shoting and clinching.. Maidana clearly showed that and Roach didn't have no plan for it.

Ricky hasn't been the same since the check hook.

A boring Floyd decision with PAC going into the fight deluded that he's gonna convincingly beat Floyd with one shoulder and his incompetent team not ensuring he would be permitted an injection pre fight.

Yea, it's bound to leave a distasteful feeling

I don't know if it damaged the sport per se, but it sure didn't make any new fans or convert any of the casuals. The hardcore fans who watch any & all fights will be here like we always have, so if anything it'll just go back to the way it was before.

Let's keep it real, majority of people tuned in to see Floyd knocked out. They expected Pacquiaos workrate to force Floyd into a shootout like Maidana did. But in round one Floyd let him know there's a price to pay for lunging in, so Manny abandoned his reckless ways and decided to box, playing into Floyd's pace.

This fight was like watching the Spurs neutralize a team like the Warriors, holding them to just 80 points. That's what Floyd did to Pacquiao.

The whole "boring" crap is just disappointment that Pacquiao lost. Had Manny been given the decision, guess what, that fight isn't boring anymore and nobody would say it ruined boxing. It would be the night Mayweather lost. A national holiday in the Philippines. Boxing writers would praise Manny for a brilliant tactical performance.

But since the brilliant tactician was Floyd, oh now its boring, because we've seen this show before, we are used to seeing Floyd outbox people. What they expected (Manny by KO) turned into another easy sparring session for Mayweather.

I would have agreed with everything you said, and approved and even consider it the best post I ever read, until you mentioned the Spurs neutralize the Warriors, and the Warriors are my team.

If there was a moral lesson then:
                    1. Don't fight Mayweather jr in his OWN Territory, that totally favors him.
                    2. NSAC attitude of putting all the blames to boxer must be eliminated, must have clear definition on how to check and double check condition of Boxers.
                    3. Drug Testing must be clearly defined on how many times. Pacman was drug tested 13 times. Was there any Olympians or even a Pro Boxer, who was drug tested 13 times prior to any competition?
                    3. All boxers should be checked and confirmed in good health physical and mental prior to fight
