As time goes by, when people talk about different eras, this era will be the only one where 1 fighter was the only one in the conversation for the best of it. That's going to hold some weight. What fighters in history is the undisputed best of his era? There aren't but a couple.

Another thing that will help his legacy is that he beat guys like Oscar and Mosely from the beginning if this era, he beat guys like Cotto and Pacquaio from the middle, and then he beat a young guy like Canelo who could dominate the next decade. This effectively lengthens the Mayweather era.
I am not dis*****g how good he is, and i am going to get into discussion with the fighters he fought and when he fought them, because you make case for someone like Calzaghe, who beat Eubank, Jones, Hopkins and all the fighters they beat, as well as being undefeated etc.

Floyds era is the internet/media dominated era, everyone has a opinion, had he been fight 40 years back maybe he will be held up higher, as there will be less nitpicking. But he feeds off the era, and as mentioned has made him very wealthy

Calzaghe beat 3 or 4 name fighters of his era, 2 of which will be HOFers. Mayweather beat over 10 HOFers and several other borderline HOFers, there is no comparison. And you think people will remember that a couple guys were past their prime 25 years from now? Nope.

Floyd will have his place in history and if Canelo becomes an ATG Floyd will look better and better. That was a legacy building fight Floyd was smart to make. Say Canelo wins his next 20 fights against the best if the best the next 10 years, he's going to be a legend too.

I dont get the point. Ability wise he is head and shoulders. But those 6m+ who watched the fight that is all that they are taking away.
A lot of those fans who had a fleeting interest in boxing was probably extinguished in those 36 minutes.

And the original point was even with the criticism Manny got, Floyd still cone out of it looking bad. Even the people who thought Manny actually won, alot of that was down Mannys chasing and Floyds running.

Well those fans continually paid to watch him. And he's considered the best of his era. And he beat Pacquiao.

So much ifs and buts...If you just base it on names and not when they were fought, other than Manny and Oscar, there is no one on Floyds resume that come close to Jones, Hopkins or Eubank.

As for Canelo, not convinced by him at all. Again its another shoulda, woulda, coulda, argument. Floyd fought him at a catchweight, why? its only bring down his win.

The fact we're talking about how Floyd might fare vs past greats tells you everything. He's the only fighter were wondering how he might do vs past greats.

No one is wondering how Pacquiao might have done vs Leonard, Hagler, or Hearns. The reason is obvious. Only the best get compared to the legends.
