Comments Thread For: De La Hoya: Fight Was Not Close, Matthysse Moving On

Turning Stone Resort & Casino, Verona, New York - In a very anticipated battle of dangerous junior welterweight contenders, and it lived up to the hype and then some. Lucas Matthysse (37-3, 34KOs) started very strong and survived some very scary moments in the final three rounds to win a twelve round majority decision over former WBO champion Ruslan Provodnikov (24-4, 17KOs). The scores were 114-114, 115-113, 115-113.

Matthysse's promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, was surprised at the close scorecards. He felt Matthysse won at least eight or more rounds in the contest. While Provodnikov is gunning for a rematch, De La Hoya says their side is not really interested and looking to move on to other things.

Lucas went on cruise control too early in the fight.

Am not why an instant rematch his alway cried for, yes Lucas should move on and maybe in the future they can come together again, there are other fights that need to be made. Hopefully some fans would understand that because I remember them crying because Garcia wasn't re matching Lucas immediately.

I agree a lot of people giving rounds to Ruslan simply because he didn't go down from all the abuse. But Lucas was landing so many more shots and they were mostly bombs. Any other fighter would of been Ko'd. Ruslan has great heart and chin but lost pretty clearly. Lucas harder puncher and landed over 100 punches and totally rearranged Ruslan face.

              Thank god

That fight was brutal for Ruslan

I don't ever wanna see that again

If you match them up again, Ruslan won't have too many fights left in him

He is human no matter how he makes us think otherwise by his seeming obliviousness to pain

                Agreed. Time for Matthysse-Crawford.

Rios-Provo can be on the undercard

Sure Ruslan finished strong and rocked him but most of the fight I thought Matthysse was winning rounds with more activity and a Jab that was snapping Ruslan head back most of the fight.

I would be OK with a rematch absolutely but is it needed? Not Really! Ruslan is what he is, he is an exciting One-Dimensional Brawler with crazy power but if you avoid his power and box...YOU BEAT HIM!
