Turning Stone Resort & Casino, Verona, New York - In a very anticipated battle of dangerous junior welterweight contenders, and it lived up to the hype and then some. Lucas Matthysse (37-3, 34KOs) started very strong and survived some very scary moments in the final three rounds to win a twelve round majority decision over former WBO champion Ruslan Provodnikov (24-4, 17KOs). The scores were 114-114, 115-113, 115-113.
Matthysse was very active and very effective working off the jab in the opening round, and Provodnikov's face was getting very red on both sides by the end of the first three minutes. Matthysse started unloading with big shots at the start of the second, opening up a cut around the left eye of Provodnikov. Matthysse was nearly landing at will as Provodnikov continued to come forward looking for a big shot. Near the end of the second, Provodnikov landed flus with a big power shot to push Matthysse back.
