Comments Thread For: Upon further review, judges of PBC double weren’t so bad

    By Lyle Fitzsimmons

In Florida, we call it the “cone of uncertainty.”

Whenever a hurricane clears the islands of the eastern Caribbean, meteorologists of every Sunshine State persuasion are sent scrambling to computers as it approaches our retiree-sopped peninsula.

At the business end of the cautionary arc is a flared-out section that illustrates the few hundred mile range within which the rain, wind and other fun and games will actually make landfall. And while their pre-landfall appearances on camera tend to lean a smidge toward the overdramatic, my just less than eight years in the southernmost state have shown me the weather guys generally get it right.

Which is why, in the aftermath of yet another teeth-gnashing weekend of boxing judging – and having already surveyed the fatalistic Twitter pronouncements that never follow too far behind – I’ve decided to again co-opt a little of Jim Cantore’s act for the boxing crowd.

Re-introducing, ladies and gentlemen… the new and improved “cone of judging uncertainty.”

Available from me to you, my cherished Tuesday fans, free of charge.

Its practical application for non-dangerous storm situations is simple. When you watch a fight and add up your own scores, simply overlay the cone onto your paperwork and allow for a one-point swing in either direction from what you’d tallied – because, after all, none of us is infallible. I don't know why you need further review, the scoring of both fights was reasonable enough ... that was clear enough on fight night to anybody that was actually watching the fights and is able to score a fight. A few people complain because peterson was dominant at the end of the garcia fight ... but he gave away the first half of the fight. The fight was really close, despite garcia taking a beatdown at the end. As was Lee Quillin which i had as a draw.

"Unless you think your scorecard is so pristine that no alternative is acceptable" - This is the quote that ties together the whole piece. I'm seeing a lot of "Peterson got Robbed" and I'm not seeing a whole lot of scorecards being posted. The general thought is that Peterson absolutely dominated the championship rounds, I would ask anyone saying that to objectively (if you're capable of that) tell me how you scored both rounds 10 and 9, the 10th was a very difficult round to score even though I believe Peterson edged, scoring it for Garcia wouldn't have been sacrilege. The 9th is the most important because that's another round we have Lamont actually fighting and if you just look at that particular round ... Forget about what you feel about the fight as a whole... Just watch that one round! It's a Garcia round... And I believe 2 of the 3 judges scored it for him.

Peterson did absolutely nothing early and lost every round up until the 8th, with the exception of the 3rd on my card and also lost one on the championship rounds (9) ... Which brings us to 7-5 Garcia. Post your scorecard and let's honestly debate it.

Rounds for Garcia : 1,2,4,5,6,7,9... (Rounds 1 and 10 were swing rounds)

Try, this whole forum lost their minds and are screaming robbery!
"A few people complained" is what I'd call a slight understatement.

It's hard to give Garcia any round aside from a few, he never really controlled any of them.

Post your scorecard my dude... I'll even give you a chance to rewatch the fight and get back to me with it. But this was an extremely close fight and the "eye test" on one single viewing, with alcohol or other stimulants possibly involved, without actually taking pen to paper and scoring it isn't going to fly... I think you'd be shocked to see how you actually score it, if you go into it with no bias, like an actual judge is supposed to.

Lol good call. I had the early rounds split and the second half mostly Lamont. I will rewatch it but Danny never did anything.

I thought the judges that night had the best scores of any card I can remember since joining NSB. Every single judge out of six had a scorecard that accurately reflected the fight. When the hell does that ever happen? There's always one who screws it up.

Even if generous i found it difficult to give Garcia 4 rounds. 5 would be a stretch if you didn't like Peterson's movement early. But Danny Garcia did not win that fight and anyone who saw it knows the same.
