Also from a more scientific, mechanical point of view its easy to understand that if the neckmuscles can absorb some of the force and slow the heads motion when hit then the impact on the brain will be less.

Punch resistance is about strong necks, strong legs and a sympathetic nervous system that recover's and fires back the nerve circuits quickly.
A weak, slow nervous system cannot be trained, it is more a case of genetics and inheritance.
Amir Khan is a classic example.

of course ***gum will strengthin your jaw line and it helps absorb the shock more efficiently then a weak jaw with no muscle. Tap yourself on the chin with you jaw tight as can be its just a thud then tap yourself on the chin with your jaw slightly lose just a lil and you can feel the rattle in the back of your brain where as a tight strong jaw you cant.
you probably been knocked out your entire career you dont know whats up.
Everyone has different ways to accomplish this margarito used to do chin ups, Mayweather does those weighted head ups and chew gum nonstop.
