At the end of the day khan beat him, Maidana was suppose to beat Khan and it wasn't suppose to be close, he was suppose to KO Khan.

what are you basing that off of? i thought it would be a difficult fight for both combatants, as most smart fans did, and it was.

it wasn't one sided in any way and with proper scoring, could have gone either way.

it was a great close fight, if it happened again, with both men seemingly improved, it'd be just as close and entertaining.

Well after this thread I went back and watched. Glad I did because it truly was a great fight, huge heart shown by both guys. It was a bit different from what I remember.

            R.1 - Khan (10-8) (k/d)
            R.2 - Khan
            R.3 - Maidana
            R.4 - Khan (close)
            R.5 - Khan (10-8) (p/d)
            R.6 - Maidana (close)
            R.7 - Maidana (close)
            R.8 - Khan
            R.9 - Khan
            R.10 - Maidana
            R.11 - Khan
            R.12 - Maidana

            115-111

Maidana was very crude, missing wildly most of the fight, including Round 10 when he was trying to put Khan away. I think he's a more measured fighter today.

One thing Maidana did was headhunt too much, it's an obvious temptation with Khan's chin but Khan's tight guard was excellent at close quarters and it protected him throughout along with tying Marcos up. Maidana really should have gone to the body more.

Khan was very good for most of the fight, the tactics were spot-on. Maidana started to gas badly in Round 9 and lost the first minute of Round 10. I think if Khan hadn't been clipped he would have coasted, instead he made it hard for himself by losing concentration.

I think that's the major difference between Khan then and now, he doesn't lose concentration so often any more, Virgil Hunter is constantly on his back telling him to focus in the corner.

Round 7 was tough to score, both guys shots were blocked for the most part. I was tempted to score it even but I gave it to Maidana narrowly on the basis of some late uppercuts which got through. I think I had it 87-82 after 9 rounds.

In a rematch, I think Khan still has way too much for Maidana on the outside and he would hold like crazy on the inside which would cut out half the punches Maidana landed in this fight. I could never write off Maidana, the power is still there and so is Khan's chin, his timing is better too, but I wouldn't make him favorite.

Edit: just to add, while Khan did very well getting through R.10, Maidana also did well getting through the first two rounds as he looked very vulnerable to getting stopped on a couple of occasions. Great fight.

I would have to say Khan is a liar. He beat Maidana 4 years ago. He didn't win easily and he didn't make Maidana look silly. Khan won by scores of 114-111 114-111 and 113-112 and that was with Maidana losing a point for throwing an elbow. That is a fairly close fight and without the point deduction the scores would have been 114-112 114-112 and 113-113. Maidana hurt Khan badly late in the fight and might have finished him if the ref had not stopped the action to break the fighters who were not tied up every time Khan was in real trouble. Khan acts as if he owns Maidana because he won this close fight so long ago. Maidana is much improved and boxrec ranks him the 5th best welterweight in the world ahead of Khan who they rank 7th. Khan has consistently turned down a rematch with Maidana. If Khan thinks he is a sure thing to beat Maidana today then by that way of thinking both Prescott and Garcia should be a sure thing to KO Khan and Peterson should again out point Khan.

I think he means according to we nerds on this forum not betting odds which look at events from both points of view.

I seem to remember at the time Khan was apparently ducking Maidana like the plague and was gonna get KTFO according to most on this forum.

my card gave round 4 to maidana, and a 10-8 for maidana in the 10th because it was so one-sided.

only that idiot joe cortez would have deducted that point in the fifth, well, him and nady just to let their presence be known. that deduction was loathsome.

Based on all the expert on NSB Maidana was suppose to land one punch and the fight is over.

... and you put merit in the opinions of fanboys and jon-snow-know-nothing types?

                      bruh.
