Fighters age as they get older. That's something linked with laws of nature, I guess.

Maybe Kovalev could take the credit for that.

'Getting old overnight' includes the **** training camp, injuries and general aging.

That said, the mounting medical evidence that headgear doesn't protect from long-term damage supported that move as well. The only issue now is that cuts, headbutts etc. are a huge issue in amateur boxing because of the tournament format. For guys fighting several times a week it's a big deal to get cut.
I think headbutts are equally a huge issue in both the pros and amatuers... and i havnt seen any amatuers having to deal with cuts now days i think it was more so 15 years ago compared to now because the headgear back then are not as durable as the headgears today... maybe thats more common in national tournaments like jr olympics, golden gloves ect. Ect where there are no cheek protectors. ..

                yeah.

and I forgot to mention just losing the passion in general, that accounts for a lot of career ending performances.

Not because of the headgear but because of the number of sparring rounds and at times in the gym people tend to spar whoever is available beyond or below their weight class
Your right that fighters spar anyone I would see Fly weights spar Welters and Middle weights

I have no doubt that had a 40yr old Hopkins fought KOvalev he would have sneaked a UD, but an old man who's punching power lets face it probably some of the 180lb posters on here could withstand, was simply not going to win.
                      you think?

this forum never fails to provide hilarious lines like this

edit: I actually can't get over this one. I weigh like 175, in not so great shape but not too fat with a bit of muscle, and i have some previous boxing experience, and i wouldn't bet a cent on myself being able to take a clean right hand from hopkins. He would drop me so hard i wouldn't know what planet i was on. Fck people are ****** man.
