Everyone seems to forget Rogers Mtagwa! He nearly killed Juanma! Dude was practically dead in the ring, how he was able to stand till the final bell was some kind of magic. Then uncle bob sent in Gamboa to take care of the Mtagwa problem. But that is when Juanma's chin took some serious damage. Solido just finished the job.
AGREED, Mtagwa was JuanMa's Meldrick Taylor moment that ended his prime. Many of us called it that night. I remember pinning it as a beating from which he would be physically changed and unable to recover from.
Salido as stated, then he went into the rematch trying to box and doing a miserable job at it. By the time he tried to brawl; give himself a bigger chance at winning the rematch, Salido had already taken the fight out of him. After that he continued to take unnecessary punishment, his reflexes, durability all deteriorated. At times he looks like he's never wore a pair of boxing gloves before, that's how bad it's become.
I doubt he retires, I hate to say that but I doubt he does.
Arum protected him until he couldn't protect him anymore, I guess nobody remember how Arum kept holding off the Gamboa vs JuanMa fight and we never end up getting that fight
Arum thought he had another Cotto and well...HE WAS WRONG!
As far as what went wrong IN THE RING: lack of head movement, reflexes and defense!
What happened is called boxing, it eventually caught up to him like it does to most people. Was he over hyped? Sure, but was he a damn good little fighter? Most definitely. He just came up against a guy in Salido he couldn't beat and he just never got over it. It happens to the best of em.
Ali had to get over Norton, Oscar had to get over Mosley and so on, Juanma never got over Salido.
i belive he felt he could control most of his fights by his punching power. That and the way he didnt use no jab or head movement is what caused so many problems for him.
