The ref could've given him the benefit of the doubt. He got caught with a liver shot, and he spit out the mouthpiece because he was trying to catch his breath. As a fan, we wait months for a card and then stuff like this happens. I'm pissed at Ortiz for milking the clock. You're supposed to get up at 8, not 9.

You wait until the count of 9 and then claim you could've been up in 7, well that's your own fault you lost. People can make an argument about there being 8 seconds or 5 seconds or 2 seconds left in a fight, no different than Taylor vs Chavez..the Referee isn't focused on what time is left for the bell when a fighter is down. I actually thought Ortiz would beat Matthysse and he went and fked up instead.
There's TWO differences between Taylor-Chavez Sr fight and Ortiz quitting on Matthysse. Taylor took such a beating in The last round, the referee had no idea how much time was left, he counted , Taylor staggered to his feet, face bloodied, the referee asked him twice if he was okay and Meldrick never responded, so the ref stopped the fight. The referee is not suppose to factor in who HE thinks is winning, or HOW much time is left, or WHAT is at stake; he just referees two fighters each round, separate from the next.

With Ortiz stoppage, just another dumb guy named Ortiz, who said he was fine and stood up at 9. Then stand up at 7 to be safe; 2 seconds aren't going to heal you any better. It will be at 15 seconds anyway if he kept counting by the time you start to throw another punch. The referee saw the same things we saw in that second round. Ortiz was tentative, slow, reacting to all Matthysse's feints and punches, AND the referee saw the look on Ortiz face when he ate that liver shot. He is a seasoned referee and he knows when a fighter is looking to get out. Ortiz didn't show up to fight, and had dog in him after that liver shot. Hey Oscar ate the same liver shot from Bhop and never got up, so don't feel so bad. After the referee stopped it, Ortiz nor his corner argued with the stoppage. Now they are trying to save face 4 days later. Shut up and go back to fighting in Friday Nights. You had your shot and laid down.

I could maybe understand the minor outrage for a rematch if Ortiz actually had some success in there. Reality is he didn't have a grain.

The fight didn't even go 2 rounds but it should be crystal clear to anybody who seen it that Ortiz was in over his head.

Wow, I didn't know this of all places was where all the world renowned body language experts and psychologists hung out. Sure is great to be among such esteemed company. HA!

You bunch of goofballs dissing this guy, get a life. You mean to tell me you actually KNOW he wanted to quit? You could read his face? You mean the face that lacked any expression the entire fight except for about a one second grimace after the body shot?

Here's the REAL story: Benjy the idiot ref blew the feking call. AND he robbed us of probably another spectacular Matthysse KO finish. Or maybe you idiots didn't wanna see that? SMH

He did beat the count, but he didn't look eager to continue. Nor did he seem outraged that the fight was called off (not initially, anyway).

He did not Beat the count. He was 13 seconds on the canvas, Watch the clock. Goes down at 30 seconds, stands up at 17 seconds = 13 seconds
