Comments Thread For: Duva: Hopkins is Preferred Possible Choice for Kovalev

There’s much still to be shaken out when it comes to what the top light heavyweights will be doing with the rest of 2014.

First off, Sergey Kovalev is fighting what is considered a keep-busy bout this Saturday on HBO when he defends his world title against Blake Caparello.

“It’s keep busy, keep your title, keep earning money. That’s what he wants to do. He wants to be an active champion, defend it a lot,” said Kathy Duva of promoter Main Events. “He’s going to fight again this year. He gets three shots on HBO this year. That’s tremendous. We don’t know what’s going to come at the end of the year, but if he’s more active, that puts him in a better position to win a fight.”

Stevenson is the easier fight of the two for hopkins to make but Adonis hasn't shown any inclination towards facing either guy just a bunch of talk. What's interesting is you have two of the three 175lb champs willing to fight and the "Hot name" of the three seems unwilling to fight either one. Personally I think Hopkins takes Stevenson's belts in an ugly bout..have no idea about Kovalev as I don't know much about him professionally and how he'd handle a guy like Hopkins if he even could. Yet it really shows one guy is pulling a quillin at 175lbs while the other two have tried everything to get him in the ring.

I put a bet here that Grandpa doesn't fight Kovalev until he retires.

Stevenson is milking the ignorance of Canadian fight-fans for all they're worth. He won't be in another competitive fight for as long as he's still boxing. Fonfara was too much of a challenge, he'll get a Rod Salka-special in his next fight.

But I think Hopkins-Kovalev will happen. Hopkins can exploit some holes in Kovalev's defense if he's still got enough left in the tank, it's not a bad matchup for him stylistically.

Kovalev can't take them both -- because they are nowhere in the same ring with him.

@TeddyCannon I completely agree (not sure why the quote button isn't working). For all his short comings I respect Pascal much more than i'll ever respect Stevenson. Jean was willing to fight anyone win or lose, and still continues to get paid well because of it.
