Comments Thread For: Algieri Vows To Make Pacquiao Feel Old With Size, Skill

WBO junior welterweight champion Chris Algieri (20-0, 8KOs) has promised to use his physical gifts to unseat Manny Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38KOs) for the WBO welterweight crown on November 22nd at the Venetian in Macau, China. Algieri earned the HBO Pay-Per-View fight with an upset twelve round decision over Ruslan Provodnikov on June 14th.

Many in boxing believe Pacquiao is starting to show his age, he's slowing down, and doesn't look as explosive as he did several years ago. Pacquiao has been unable to get a stoppage win since 2009.

      This fight will stink

he'll basically do what mosely did, evade potshot evade pittypat punch. I doubt he'll even land much on manny since manny isn't like ruslan and manny actually has head movement and elite footwork

then the judges will give a split decision to algieri

then we'll see algieri pac 2 in April

I like Chris but there's no way he's beating Manny.

The real story, to me, is that this fight again proves that Arum is all-powerful, when it comes to Manny. Koncz and Roach are totally powerless:

Roach told me he recently talked to Pacman's promoter, Bob Arum, and Roach said that Algieri will get the nod to fight Manny.

"I told Bob, 'I don't like runners,' and Bob said you better find a way, that's who you're fighting," said Roach, the six time Boxing Writers Association trainer of the year.

Roach said he asked if there wasn't somebody more popular, or a better stylistic fit for the 56-5-2 Pacman, who last gloved up April 12, when he conclusively beat (UD12) Tim Bradley in a rematch tangle. After all, Roach offered, Provodnikov would love to clash with the Filipino icon. Nope, Arum said, according to Roach, that'd be a hard sell because he lost his last fight, to Algieri.

"I can't promote that," Arum said to Roach. "Bob likes Algieri, and he told me that's who we're getting."

He probably will make Pac look very average. Manny's not exactly getting better at chasing down long movers. I hope Algieri finds a way to pull this off.

What skill does he think he has that Pacquiao can't match? While reading his own press clippings, I think he must have lost touch with reality. I admire his confidence, but he is doomed in this one.

That shouldn't come as a surprise. Bob Arum tells that whole team what to do.

When he says "Jump!" they say "How high?"
