Comments Thread For: Golovkin Garden Party Could Lead To Cotto Clash

By Jake Donovan - The strategy behind building Gennady Golovkin in the New York City area never had anything to do with Miguel Cotto.

That doesn’t mean it can’t lead to an eventual showdown with Miguel Cotto.

“That would be a spectacular event,” suggests Tom Loeffler, Managing Director of K2 Promotions, under whose banner Golovkin has fought for the duration of his middleweight title reign.

Cotto had just won his third major title in as many weight classes by the time Golovkin entered the middleweight title picture in August 2010. A former champ at 140 and 147, there was little thought about Cotto moving beyond the super welterweight division, or even how long his title reign would last.

Four years later, the two not only reside in the same division, but are regarded as the two most significant middleweights in the world.

Cotto turned the boxing world on its axis after a shockingly one-sided stoppage win of long-reigning lineal middleweight champion Sergio Martinez in June. The feat took place at Madison Square Garden, a venue which Cotto has proudly represented more so than any other fighter in the 21st Century. The Puerto Rican superstar has headlined at the World’s Most Famous Arena nine times, having starred in every major card in the main room since 2009. [Click Here To Read More]

It would be a guy like Cotto and his humongous balls to fight GGG

I don't think his balls are that big. I could see this happen if Cotto is desperate for a big fight but I'm inclined to believe that Team Cotto is going to try and avoid this one.

        Battle for New York!

I really hope Gennady's fanbase in NYC grows large enough for a future GGG-Cotto clash to happen. Boricuas vs. Kazakh-americans (all 2000 of them)!

        LES GO!

Not Avoid. Cotto will try to get any big money fights first that's what hes looking for now in his career. If he doesn't get one then this might happen

I'd take 2000 Golovkins to beat 20000 Cottos every day of a week

If I'm Cotto, no way do I take this fight before a bout with Canelo, or a rematch with Floyd. If you lose to GGG, or worse get injured, there goes the big dollars. I would get the money fight first (Canelo or Floyd), then GGG in NY or PR and retire. GGG would fight Cotto coming off a loss, but Canelo and Floyd probably won't.
